Star, Delta changeable

Selectable from the bottom of the tower

Hello,

It seems most people wire their stator fixed either as "star" or as "delta".  I'm wondering if it does not make since to run six wires down the tower instead of three (2 for each phase) and then the user could make star or delta selections with the flip of a switch (or a couple switches) at the bottom of the mast.  I'm thinking of this because most to the time I have very light wind suggesting star is best.  But our winter storms can pack a punch and during those times delta would be better.

Has anyone done something like this?  Is there any reason not to?

Rob

It's perfectly possible, most people probably wouldn't want to do it manually.

You can do it automatically with a speed( frequency) sensitive switch and a double pole changeover contactor.

I suspect that most people have enough power in star and when the high winds come they are dumping anyway so the extra from delta would not be needed.

In a poor wind area you need to use every trick.

Star delta/ is a rough method but it does give some gain. You may find manual switching is adequate and simpler if these winds are not common.

Hi,

Flux, as usual is correct. Getting 10% more from 300 watts is only 30 watts more, however, with bigger mills, e.g., 1000 W, then the extra 100W will come in handy.

Lots of info from Amanda and others re LM2917 frequency to voltage chip + triple pole dual throw switches to change star/delta.
