what to do with HD parts

I was rooting around in my shop and I dug up 85 bad hard drives. Has anyone used the magnets or other parts in these for anything useful? I thought I might use the magnets and coils for a small genny just for fun. How about doubling up the magnets for a larger genny. I have many of the same kinds so they fit together well. Let me know if anyone has opinions or thoughts.

Regards,
badmoon

search the board here, there's been a couple of neat machines made from these.  Seems like a tedious way to go, but workable.

Hi Dan,

That is kind of what I figured, but now I've found over 120 of the dog gone things. What to do, what to do. I suppose I am somewhat of a pack rat, but I like little motors and bearings. I even saved all of the bad power supplies to save the fans and get the copper and components. When did they start using neo's in the drives? Oh well, cheap is as cheap does.

Regards,

I just wanna have some fun, maybe learn something new every day and make some friends in the process.

The most useful things are going to be the mags.  The platter motors seem to be worthless, but some people are trying to use them as bearings.  I, personally, and trying an experiment in using the voice coils instead of winding new ones.
