? about offset in an R.A.C.

would appreciate some input

i have been working on a design for a single phase RAC and have bumped up against a lack of knowledge on offsetting coils/mags to avoid cogging; which i think may also result in easier startup?
i have seen a post on spiral offsets (Hanu, I belive) on this board but i do not grasp the theory as to aligning mags and coils when the mags are offset in this manner; are the coils offset the same amount as the mags in a machine like this, ie are the coils in matching sprials too?
never built an RAC without/with offset, so i am in uncharted waters with the concept.
input appreciated
thanx,
spinner
Editors Note:
It is ALWAYS a good idea to define abbreviations. R.A.C.may mean different things to different people.
Might make getting answers easier if you were absolutely clear on what you are asking.

Radial Air Core?
Sorth of experimental here at the moment.

OoPs! i did a boo-boo!
Should have said: Radial Air Core, not R.A.C.

If it's an air core, it will not cog.

There's plenty of knowledge in here w.r.t. de-cogging generators. Read Zubbly's posts, my diary, JacquesM's posts, Sparweb's 3hp conversion, etc. Admittedly, these stories are about conversions, but you'll learn a lot about cogging and how it may apply to you. But, as was said before: if it's an aircore genny, it won't cog.

It will vibrate under load, but that's what you get when you go single phase...

thank you for the reply, Peter

had some thoughts about vibration and the like during this initial sketch n' scratch phase of design, but am more concerned about building this 1st attempt at a Radial unit
in a 3 phase configuration; I have looked at the units others have/are building and am not all that sure I can pull off a three phase, despite its advantages...guess it's the old "ya gotta walk before ya can run" thing!

thanx,
