Washing-Machine Motor Conversion

Question for Zubbly

Hey Zubbly,

Aren't you the motor-conversion expert?  I'm wondering if the motors from old washing machines have any potential, either as generator conversions or as parts sources.  I can't remember exactly how they're configured (it's been a while), but I do know that they're easy to find for free!

Maybe the windings are of a useful gauge, and are easy to salvage?

If this turns out to be a duplicate post, it's because the first one I tried disappeard from the board after about 30 minutes.

Hiker did some of those.  Search 'Maytag'.

hi slingshot

"Maybe the windings are of a useful gauge, and are easy to salvage?"

You'll find several different sized windings in there. Startwinding will be the thinnest, sixpole probably next thicker, and fourpole will be thickest. I have had easy removal, as the stator in most cases comes out of the housng on its own.

Good test bed for this purpose alone. I have wound 36,24,18 12, 8, 4 pole systems using the same wire over and over again just to test things. ( 12 poles is the maximum useful pole count, but i had to find out anyhow.

I have no doubt that it can be used with its original fields with neo's. But for learning, they are an excellent device as they are so accessable, and easy to pull down/build up again
