observations on my stator-x

just posted my observations in my user files

the notion for a stator made like this intrigued me so I built one.
i recorded what i saw when experimenting with the unit but did not feel that it would be of sufficent merit to do other than mention it here for submission  as part of the boards general knowlege pool.

i've considered making a stator with wood , how did you hold the individual coils in place?

Hiya Wilibur

the stator was made from hardboard (i think that is the proper name for it) not particleboard or wood...which is  just a hair under 1/2" thick, about 1/16" thicker than the coils.

i routered out cutouts for the coils that were about 1/8" larger than the coils to allow room for resin around them, then I used my lil dumor grinder to cut  4 groves from the cutout outward about 1/8" and countersunk each one so that theese "legs" would give the coil more support when moulded into the stator body.
The  2 molds halves are simply made from two scrap sheets of aluminum that are bigger than the stator with 6 thru bolts beyond the o.d. of the stator...the aluminum sheets are fastened to 1/2" ( what i had layin' around ) chunks of plywood so you can squeeze  everything together after you pour in the resin.
i also had 4 plastic wire ties on each coil that fit into those groves in the stator body to hold it in place.
one coil was a lil off center thickness wise because i wasn't careful eneough when tightening up the bolts...otherwise the process seemed to work well eneough (especially for a VAWT that is not subject, i think, to as much torque as a hawt.

mornin'
nope, it is one stator

it was an experimental (like mosta my stuff g) unit wherein the coils were sandwiched between two pieces, thus avoiding the pouring/moulding processes for the stator...the two pieces each had 1/8" pieces on their inner surfaces that matched the shape of a coil center section attached to them..the coils were fastened with adhesive to the bottom ring...

biggest problem with it was too much airgap for the small mags....voltage output was sufficent but it took lotsa wind to get amperage up to a reasonable level with the wide airgap

yeah you gotta decrease that air gap , if you want a decent voltage/ current..
