well why woundnt it be!!!!

goes like this.... took my 10" mill out for a over nite test.. good wind.. my reinforced pole mount worked great--no more clanking noise... chopped down my blades even more --took off about 4" more.. plus i shortened the mounting pole..mill was nice and tight now.. all this did help out--but i still had noise comming in..seemed like the noise was amplified from being mounted to the back of the motorhome..every time the mill turned out of the wind it would sound like a airplane changing the pitch on there props.. plus the buzzing sound of the alt--from low to high..then toss in my dump load . one 400watt 38v. landing light and one 100 watt. 13v headlight.. all nite it would go from light to dark..then this large noise really wakes me up-motorhome shaking-- sounds like a freight train going by--i thought the mill had blew up.. well it did turn out to be a freight train going by..tracks right across the road!! all in all thou it was a great nite......thanks to a little colt45. this was just a test to see if it would make it throu the nite[there was some high winds out there]--next time i will tie the blade down --and charge batt.s in the mourning....  heres a shot of  the demize of big black.. <img

heres my reinforce pole mount--2by6 with groves cut out to hold pole and ladder.. plus a 2by4 cut out the same.. WILD IN ALASKA

just a comment about big black.. in a way i think i lucked out having big black take a flying leap off the back of the motor home..i was kind of worried about that base mount in the first place--even thou  it was a 2by6-all the weight sat on the grain--even with big whashers..i planned on making a plywood base for it[3 layers of 3/4" ply].. would have really tore the hell out of the back of the motorhome if it gave out.. don"t really need one that big for the motorhome-might rebuild it and hang it on the side of the shop-should keep my big workaholic batt charged............ Main mast broke in half. stator damage, broke in half.. are you sure your dog didn't over jump and miss you when you opened the door to get petted?? :) Ouch!! Certainly no concerns of valdalism! I think it's important to publish our goofs as well as sucesses. Sorry to see big black suffer though.

big black was my 12" alt--this post is about my 10" alt...big black never did get to fly..he tried but fell short and hard..you can read about big black in my diary-couple of days ago.............. WILD IN ALASKA [ Parent ]

Thanks for the info and pics. This is what I am working on myself, 1966 Chevy. Had to take off the rear add on section so I can put a hitch on it. Only 2' square tubing from the body to the bumper. I would not trust just that for towing a trailer and car. At 11MPG maybe I should drive the red van there instead and tow the motor home behind that :( It's 40 years old but runs and drives great, once you get the corners wore off the Biosply tires. . nothing to lose Spelin and tpying are my strong points, not electronics.

Hiker, Just a thought.  You might get less noise and vibration if you went to 3 blades instead of 4.  4 blades still pose some of the same on and off gyroscopic vibration problems associated with a 2 blade prop. Johnlm

10-4 on that... i thought i would need the extra power from 4 blades--turns out i don't.. my blades have a good angle at the hub -then i flatin out the leading edge down to the tips[and of course a airfoil shape on backside]makes for a good blade..saved a whole lot of cutting -rasping and sanding..with my angled hub cutouts..the blades were made from 1by4s.. im going to chop off another 3"s from the blades--of course i will have to reshape the ends of the blades--soon i will have 4 little stubs stickin out if i cut any more. :] wired in jerry delta-the alt does not have as much resistance[blades turn easyer] and it puts out more power than wired in star--so it puts out good power with a smaller blade..it gets the power from the extra rpms..because theres less resistance=more rpm. so no need for a big slow torky blade......least wise thats what i found out messin with my little alt........ just a addition .. when i had the alt wired in star it would barely light up my 400watt.38 volt landing light--and the blades would want to stall--need for bigger blades.. when wired in jerry delta it would light up the 38v 400watt landing light[not to full bright but a whole lot brighter than star] and no blade stall[sure could hear the alt workin thou-bzzz]......im just tryin  get the most from a compact unit.. one more...... the total weight of the alt. is less than 30 pounds.. alt plus tail weigh in at 24 pounds--prop weighs in at about 5 pounds.. WILD IN ALASKA [ Parent ]
