Cable Twisting

Cable Twisting...

I know that a lot of you have gone to just cable, and not slip
rings.  In central Alberta, Canada, I have found out, the hard way,
that winds go in a pattern.  This may not be applicable to all,
depedinding on location, but here, you can't depend on Mother Nature.

I have a small genny, at 60 feet, and I am happy with it.
But recently, it stopped headig into the wind.  I thought that
the bearings had locked up, but they were fine. Of course it took
me far too long to figure out that the welding cable was wound so
tight that nothing could turn.
Sliprings are not required for all, but in some locations,
there is not a choice.
Thanks to all that submitted to the Mech, section.  It was a lot
of help.

It sounds like you might have run the cable on the outside of the tower.   Most of us run the cable down the inside of the tower with a quickie plug in at the bottom.   I personally haven't had to unplug and untwist the wire ... yet.   If its run down the center, it would take quite a few turns to actually bind the cable.

No ran the cable down the centre of the tower.  Have to admit, that I did not consider it an issue that I didn't check until the tower got locked up.  The cable (actually two small welding cables) looked like
a piece of rope.  I think I am in a ODD wind area, as things seem to
go in a clockwise pattern.
    Thanks Windstuff

Is the top of the tower level?
I had one twist up quick. The wind blew it up hill, gravity pulled it down hill. I could not see it happening, but when the tower was more level, it quit twisting.
Nice smooth bearings probably make it worse.

Good point.  And it is not level.  It was, but as it is just a light
tower for test purposes, it got bent in a strong wind we had a while back.
I am not sure, but that seems to be about when the cables started
twisting.
I use teflon bushings on the tower, and they are fairly friction-less.
Am working on a proper tower, kind of a smaller version of what DanB
is doing, so I will check to see if the problem goes away before I do
the slip ring thing.  It's always nice to avoid anything that complicates
things.
Thanks ghurd, as I probably wouldn't have thought of that.

If you ran them down the center with the quick disconect, how often were you checking the bottom? How long did it take to knot up?

I did run the cables in the center, and considered it a non issue.
Time was about 4 months.  Here we get no wind, high wind.  No disconnect, as it is still an experimet.  Mistake.

Anyway, I guess may only point, was to say that in some odd areas, the wind does go in a pattern.

Once I get the Genny happy, I will be working on slip rings.

     Thanks JMK

Sorry for my ignorance here but, I'm about ready to install my 10ft 3PH genny
on my 76' tower and its time to get the tower cable.
What's the best kind to get? Solid strand, multi-strand, rubberised,
plastic coated etc???
Also, what size/diameter wire do you need to maintain efficiency for a 110 ft run?
Thanks
