Marathon 5 HP

Looks similar to Zubblys 7.5

I recently picked up a 5HP, 4 pole 220 Marathon Electric from my machinest friend. It had a badly burnt
winding so I striped them out of it. I have yet to subject it to the oven treatment to remove
the insulators. It is very similar to Zubblys 7.5 HP unit except that there are a group of slots that
are not as deep as the rest. I presume that these were for the start windings. I'd like to make this a
6 pole but the difference in the slots, gives me pause. So "Z" man and any others what say you, do I
 worry to much.
If every thing comes together it will be a 48 volt machine good for 4-5 KW.
I plan to turn down the Armature, and install a plastic sleeve to hold Neo button magnets similar to
the aluminum or fiberglass tubes "Z" man uses.

next time resize your pics to under 100kb and be sure they have .jpg on the end of the file name before you upload them.

hi drdongle,

the start winding slots do make it a bit more of a challenge.  basically, you will be limited to the required turns and wire size for the coils that the start winding slots will hold.

even with the reduced wire size, i think it will still give fine performance and output. i did do a small single phase stator with the same smaller start winding slots, made it a 2 phase because it was 32 slot, and it still turned out a good machine.

one thing i should have brought up before for stripping windings.  you can use the liquid furniture stripper (submerging the stator in it, let sit for a few hours, then rinse with clean water) winding and insulation will pull out very easy.  only drawback is that it smells and protective clothing and eye ware should be used.
