10 Footer Flying

Been a long time since I posted anything but, about 6 months ago my 6' conversion fell and damaged the blades and about a week later I fell and broke my wrist. I have just now finished my 10'  9/12 dual rotor. Here are a few pics:     Here's the 6 footer on the ground, through no fault of it's own.  We were having very gusty 30 to 40 mph winds and due to a small imbalance in the blades, and my inept welding, the bracket holding the conversion to the tower failed on the 3rd day and this is where I found it in the morning, all three blades damaged plus shaft bent. Good learning experience. Here are two shots of the 10 footer on the tower.  This was a bit scary getting into the air as I used the same tower the 6 footer was on and the top 10 feet of this is only 1 1/2" pipe.  This has now been up for about three weeks, the max I have seen from it so far has been 300 watts, in about 18 mph winds.   Cut in seems to be a bit high at about 10 to 11 mph.  I am not sure of the reason for this yet and need to give it some more obvservation.  I am thinking that the tail might need more offset, not sure yet whether it is running square to the wind or whether it's the blade not performing to it's true TSR.   Thanks for all the help guys Christopher         you need to resize your pics a bit more to get them under the 100k limit, and you need to make sure the file names end in .jpg before you upload them here. i will leave them this time becouse they are just a little over but in the future your pics will have to be under 100k or they will be removed. Hi Christopher, sorry to hear about the six footer. The ten footer looks real nice. I think you need to put it back down though and get some better tower pipe, or it will be next to the six footer. I have a twelve footer and when the wind blows to about 30 mph I can see a tremendous force on the tower. I think 11/2" pipe might only work for a short time. I would hate to see that nice machine get destroid. jmk

We need to hear more about the alt itself, how many turns of what size wire . magnets used? it looked cool , but i dont see it anymore , maybe you are in the process of resizing them, no need to since they were allready accepted , and since you are on the front page it might be nice to see something :) Carpe Ventum (seize the wind)

Hey guys, sorry about the large pictures, I have tried to resize and they are now uploaded again and in the post.   Here is one more pic of the coils before potting: The coils were 38 winds 4 in hand and I brought out all the starts and ends so that I could reconfigure for 12, 24 or 48 volts.  On test before raising it, I showed a cut in at 125 rpm at 12.5 volts.  Amps into 12 volt battery 5 at 150 rpm, 10 at 180 rpm, 15 at 200 rpm.  But in true world the props seems to be turning a bit slower than it's design perimeters of TSR 6, but I am not sure whether it's because of the loss at the root of the prop or it might be because it is not running fully into the wind because of the tail offset.   Thanks for all the help Christopher

Christopher It may be running slow because it is stalled. If you have a 6 v battery about, try it into 18V. If not try it at 24v on a reasonably windy day. you will soon see if it is stall. If so open the air gap 1/4" and try again. Flux [ Parent ]

is that a shadow or is the inner half of your leading edge  blunt? blunt is not so good and would contribute to your high cutin speed for sure also what is that gizmo on the board ,next to the coils , at about one o'clock from that left foot ;-) your current is impressive , what size magnets did you use? actually it would have nothing to do with the cutin speed , which is strictly altermator related .. But it would effect the blade RPM relative to the wind speed , which is what i ment to say. Carpe Ventum (seize the wind) [ Parent ]

Hi Christopher, I don't know that much about your gennie...except that it looks really ,really good, but, have you tried opening the air gap a bit? If not, open it a bit and let 'er go....may the wind be with you.

Thanks guys! But, yes Flux, trying this into 18 volts was the first thing I did with no increase in wattage.  No, it just seems the prop is slow, I do not see cut-in until 10 to 11 mph.  Although if you remember from my previous post I had done just over a 5" offset because I was hoping to furl early because you thought I should limit these windings to 600 watts because of the resistance.  And I feel I may not have offset the tail enough to compensate for this large offset of the blades and they may not be running 90 degrees to the wind but have not had enough time to investigate further yet. Will let all know if I get this sorted out. Christopher
