24V socket

Is there a standard socket for 24V?

Hello,

I believe the cylinder shaped 12V socket is a legacy of automobile cigarette lighters.  I'm wondering if there is a similar standard socket for 24V and also 48V for that matter.  My RE system is 24V driving a 110V inverter but I'd like to pull 24V directly for some applications and want to know the standard type of connection if there is one.  If anyone could point me to a reference document for this kind of question that would be great too.

Thanks all,
Rob

Hello Rob,

Sorry, but there is no standard.

What many people do is use a 240V 20A outlet, which has one of the plug lines at a 90 deg angle. If this needs to be to code, this is acceptable, as long as you don't have any 240V outlets in your house (i.e., no electric dryer or range, and your hot water heater, if electric, has to be hard-wired). Also, the plugs are readily available, cheap, and you can't mix them up with standard 120V 15A plugs.

Another possibility is the Anderson PowerPole, a bit more expensive, a bit harder to get, but standardized for different voltages of DC (just unusual for house receptacles, as it is an amateur radio plug) and available in whatever amperage you need. I don't know if this meets code, but I don't see why not, since they're UL listed.

Best Regards,
Dave

I like using the Anderson Power Poles which come in several currents.  A variant of these are the SB-50, SB-175 and higher that are commonly used on fork lift batteries.
