Seems I have another possible conversion donor.

Hi, Zubbly.  Sorry to be another to pester you again for more info, but I guess that's what comes from being the board expert on these type of things, huh?  :)

Anyways, got a donor motor here and was wondering what you thought of it.

AO Smith Mod # P48SW6V2

  1. /4 HP
  2. RPM
  3. 9 Amp
  4. Phase
  5. Hz
Is it any good for a small conversion using my little 3/8" X 3/8" magnets?  Or is this another one that'll be too much of a PITA for what I'll get out of it?

I haven't even ventured to open it up to see what would be involved in turning down the rotor to fit the magnets, just wondering what you thought of it before I even dig into it.

Thanks for any help you can offer.  I really appreciate you folks giving me advice, even if it is to tell me I'm being crazy!!  :D

hi Nanotech,

i sure do think that 3/4 hp 6 pole motor will be worth converting. open it up and have a good look inside. post some pics later if you can.

a good job on it should net you 500 watt in a good strong wind. i have done 1/2 hp conversions that did produce 500 watt.

keep this in mind also. since it is 3/4 hp at 6 pole, the lamination set would be close to the equivalent of a 1hp 4 pole machine. so it has good potential.

most of my smaller conversions use the 3/4 round by 3/8 thick mags. i see no problem using the 3/8 wide mags. just be more holes to drill and the 3/8 diameter may even make it easier to get the mag pole width you want.

go for it!  :)
