Easily resize images for this site

Here's how I easily resize images for this site.

My instructions are only meant to work with Windows XP and Outlook. It may work with other mail clients but this is what I have. Have all the pictures you want to post in a folder and have another empty folder ready. Highlight all the pictures, right click on them and choose: Send To -> Mail Recipient. Windows will ask you if you want to make the pictures smaller, choose yes. The pictures will then be resized and attached to a new mail message. In the mail message, right click on a picture and choose "Select All" Right Click again and choose copy. Then back to the empty folder and right click and choose "Paste" The resized pictures will paste into the folder, much smaller in size, perfect for posting to this board. This is how I do it. My pictures begin at 1600 X 1200, 600-800 Kb. After the resize, they are at 640 X 480 and usually a bit less than 90-100 Kb. It's a down and dirty way to resize them without the need of a fancy program  to do it with unless you call XP fancy :)

On the mac, with OS X (10.4) Tiger;

Make an Automator app using the Preview 'Scale images' action. When you drop that into the workflow it'll ask you whether you want to add a Finder copy action, click add. The defaults are fine and you can save the workflow as an application...I put it on my desktop and called it "Scale480" but whatever you want to do is fine.

I usually crop the images in Preview first. Then I drag the files onto "Scale480". The scaled images will appear in the same folder as Scale480. Depending on the original file size they may be ready to upload now. But...

I usually drop the images into OmniGraffle next (the trial will work but I use 'Pro') and use its export function. OmniGraffle seems to make smaller jpegs than Preview and you can annotate (draw/write on) the images and play with the quality setting before exporting.

If you don't want to use OmniGraffle then you can use the quality setting in Preview (Save As...) to bring the file size down with that instead, if you need to.

You might not have OmniGraffle installed by default but it's handy even in trial form (well worth the download), everything else is built-in. take it easy

Thanks Feral Air, hopefully these two posts should cover most users of this site.
