metal dust on the move round stator

 it made me smile

there is so meny things that happen with a wind mill .
its almost a  mirical it works so well.
so i hope no one thinks i am waisting  time and space on this site.
but what i saw amazed me so much i just had to make post out of it.
with rotor on and fixing stainless steel studding to hold stator.
i was adjusting for clearance . its only a single rotor.
turning shaft and making adjustments every thing was spinning free.
then i was just looking at stator while rotor was spinning and to my amazment i
saw what looked like small fillings walking round the back of stator.
i turned rotor other way and thay went in opisite direction .
the small filings looked about 2mm long . and were turning end over end.
and going round in a circle on top of the resin.
i tried to pick them off to look at them but thay turned to dust.
i certinly had made myself a great toy.
i turned it verry slow and still thay turned end over end  then spinning it faster
  thay still done the same.
well i found this so interesting. maybe others wont.
maybe to them its old hat.  but to me was truely amazing.
maybe sumone can explain how this was happening.
a while back i was gring a magnet rotor in my workshop.
maybe this was small bits it picked up from the bench top.
so before i put every thing together i will get a vacuam cleaner and try get all the metal dust off.
watching this was just a bonus.  and for me it was fasinating.
my prop is finished now and got its war paint on.
every day is a bonus . and one day soon it will be flying.
but with my luck it will be force nine outside when i am ready.

fixed your pic.
Kurt

I've always been very mechanical, but the electrical and magnetic stuff here is all new to me and very fascinating. If you have a spare magnet laying about, put a piece of white paper over it and sprinkle on some steel filings. Move the magnet around, then set the magnet on its side and put a steel plate on one side.

It will be a few years before I will be in a place where I can have a 3-blade HAWT, but after reading this post, I want to take the stator laid flat, and put the white paper/filings on it. When spinning one rotor, I think seeing the magnetic fields dancing would be fun and educational.

yea, just like a miniature marching band doing a circular parade.
it was cool until i realised that it was my flux escaping !
here's one to try if you have lots of iron filings
put your rotor in a plastic bag and poor on the filings
then place a second mag rotor in place and see how all the filings line up between them

Nice way to think of how it makes electricity - the magnets are doing the same thing to the electrons inside the wires making em produce a current :)

Yes, I always find that amusing as well.  It's also fun how they go 'backwards' (the chips always 'march' in the opposite direction that the magnet rotor is turning)

Try sticky-tape to remove the metal dust if the vacuum cleaner doesn't work.

hi kurt and a big thank you for sorting out the pic i tried to post.
and i also found your bit peter about removing metal dust from magnets verry helpfull.
i know thay use sticky tape to remove dog and cat hairs from clothes and things.
but when it came to try clean the dust etc from a rotor with mags fitted.
but not yet put in resin . i had big probs.
spent ages picking it off with my fingers.
i was to afraid to try use another magnet in case it went (*******)
thanks for the replys guys . to be honest i thought the origanal post might get deleated lol.
so it was nice to see i was not alone in watching this thing happen.
your lucky dan cos you must get to watch it more than others .building all them mills
 like you do.
what a shame i never knew this before as i could have made one wrapped it up in christmas paper and gave it my kids as a present.
thay would have been delighted. lol.

its a ill wind that dos no good
