Hmmm, I'm not so smart.

My VAWT is a no go-go.

Ok, my wife's not thrilled.

I thought this was gonna be easy.  Well, okay, not easy, but at least do-able.

I started constructing my own PMA / VAWT that I thought would be a nice project to get my feet wet.

I took the 6 coil assembly out of a box fan (that's the part that upset the wife) and strapped it on a horizontal plane to the end of an upright 3x3 of Poplar that had a 1-1/4" hole drilled in it.  I glued my magnets to the crosssings of a Nice Bontrager rear wheel, put a 15t cassette ring on the freehub body do it would not botttom out and then ropped the wheel into the opening of the poplar.

Ok, so I've got 1-2mm of clearance between my magnets and my coils.  I unlinked the coils from one another and tied every other one to each other.

My plan was to put 1/2 of a 4" pvc (18" in length) to the outside of the rim to get it to spin.

Still, I thought if I spun it by hand, I shoud get Something.  I get nothing.  It looks cool, but that's aboout it.

My problem is mostlikely in the fact that the coils are lame and thin or that I wired incorrectly.

Any thoughts for this newbie from this poor discription?

Thanks.  Enjoying as a lurker for a few months now.

Your posting is clear as mud.

Make sure the coils alternate. You can also accomplish this buy reversing the leads of every other coil. and also make sure the mags are N-S-N-S-...

IMHO I would buy a new box fan for the wife, when it comes to my personal projects I have found keeping the wife happy will save you in the long run.

Don't worry, Sandia Labs couldn't get a VAWT to reliably produce power either. They didn't have your wife to deal with .... they also had a lot more folks money.

We're gonna need photos.  Or at least a LOT more details.
How many magnets?  N-S-N-S-? 1, 3, 5 phase?  Star, delta, Jerry?

Box fan.
"I unlinked the coils from one another and tied every other one together"?  Uh, What?
"that I wired incorrectly"  Sounds like it.
"I thought if I spun it by hand, I shoud get Something".  Yes.
"problem is mostlikely in the fact that the coils are lame and thin".  No.

Did you try to copy another box fan post?

Someone used his expensive mountain bike wheels (bontrager) with a 15 teeth cog on it and built his pma.

From the description it seems like the magnets are configured as axial flux while the coils and stator laminate stack are radial flux......
