Oh, is-'nt  it  just  Prec-ious!

I did it. I did it. I really, really did it. I said I'd do it and I did it, and I did it, I did it! (ok, enough of the My Fair Lady routine)

  Congrats !  It's always exciting when a plan comes together and proves to be successful.  Pretty clever use of scrounged materials as well... actually gave me a few good ideas !   So I assume there is another project brewing in your mind as we speak?...

Naturally Ed, I've only just begun. Next I plan to do the stator like you recommended so I'll have more than a trickle charger. The mount is just a quicky, I want to redo it using 2 PVC T's to make an offset and put the fitting for the tail at an angle so it can furl. Picture your "down wind turbine" but smaller and in PVC for those us us that should not use a welder. Then there is the savonius, by no means forgotten. I have to add this board has been great but no single person helped me as much as you and your site. Thanks.

I like the bearings out of the rotor body . I 've been working on smaller lighter getset . With the wind rotor in a longer shaft the pressure is lessened on both bearings allowing sealed bearing with smaller races .

 Traveler-

  Congradulations on the new addition! Last night, just after all of the fireworks were over, I coulda swore I heard a swishing noise coming from the north...I'm in Geneva Fl., just south of you, and my folks are in New Smyrna.

  I'll have to get by there and check out the mill.

Good job Traveler !
   I wanna do the same thing, but still learning the concepts.  I've figured out the solar part, but the DIY windmill I still don't get.  I wish the otherpower people were in Montreal, then I could go pick their brain in person ! :)

 hi travler . i said it would be nice if i got to see sum pics.
  but you done better than that you also had a short video.
  well comments. looks great. its easy to see you worked from your own ideas.
  putting sum thing together as you have done can be hard work . but its flying.
  so i can understand how you felt about it.
  without using steel and doing welding is harder.
  but you want to consider using nuts and bolts . maybe even a tap and die set.
  i have done sumthing very similar to you .
  the shaft turns inside the bearings .like yours.
   prop fitted on the shaft like yours. stater and rotor fitted behind head stock.
   again like yours . but i have rotor then stator.  but still much the same.
  i done that cos if i want to put another rotor on the other side it will be much easer.
   your coils look very neat. you done a nice job winding them.
   i think the closer the rotor is to the stater the better.
  you will lose power with a 1/4" gap.
  gaps are more important on a twin rotor.
  so as far as i know you want to close that gap up a bit.
   so all in all a very good attempt . not using a welder and steel tube.
 so where there's a will there's a a way.
    dont forget ply wood gets wet and gets heavy.
   you  got a good imagination  when it comes to putting things together.
   now you need to think how it will look in six to eight weeks time.
  i am almost finished my single rotor mill.
   just got to build a pipe tower for it now.
   your stater looks good
   you got three lugs on it so why the ply disc.
  its good to see your thinking about building another.
   keep up the good work . will try post a pic of how mines is looking as of today.

Well, my first mill is off and flying and I have mixed emotions. On the one hand my goal was to produce a working PMA no matter how small the power. I just wanted it to work so I could experiment with it and learn more and it did in fact work right from the start. On the other hand I naturally wated it to perform better than I hoped for and of course it performed well below what I expected. No matter. I wanted to learn so now I am analyzing it and going over the math. If anyone can take the time to check my numbers I'd appreciate it. I listed most of the specs in the first post of this thread, I will repeat some.
There are 9 coils, 3 phases wired star. Each coil is 120 turns of #22 wire and weighed in at 70 grams. That makes 210 grams per phase.
210 grams = .463 lbs. per phase.
#22 wire has approx.,  .195 lbs per 100'
#22 wire has 1.614 ohms per 100', so
  1. phase = appro. 237' of wire
  2. ' of #22 wire should have about 3.83 ohms of resistance.
Now here I'm less sure but at 12.4 volts and 3.83 ohms 1 phase should put out something like 3.24 amps max?

Now to figure how many amps the PMA can put out do I multiply 3.24 x 1.7** ?

We have had 10 to 20 mph, fairly steady winds for the last 2 days, what I think would be optimum conditions for testing, and this thing put out about 1.64 amps max. and mostly around .33 amps. I was hoping to see 20 to 50 watts and what I got was 4 to 20

I know this newbie stuff makes you guys nuts but I'm really trying here. Let me know what you think.
