Before I learn the hard way...

Harbor Freight solar panels - I have read all the posts I could find on them and one caught my eye. It said the frames seem like they could be sealed better, maybe silicone caulk. So I'm wondering, are these panels meant to be left outside in all weather? Thats a question I didn't think needed to be asked but I suppose I shouldn't assume anything. Has anyone had a failure on these panels due to the environment? What would happen if the frame let rainwater in? I know, I know, I have newbie written all over me...

Hi: Off your question a bit, most of the panels in HF are over priced. Every once in a while in there inside track flyer, they have those 3 - 1' x 3' 15 watters (total 45) on sale for 179USD. That isn't to bad a price. Other than that, its all through the roof. On most solar panels the water seal is accomplished by sealing the glass plates themselves. The frame is more of an edge protection "thing" and finishing the looks.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was talking about the 3 panel, 45 watt setup.

My panels have been outside for 3 months now in North Alabama. I have never seen condensation on the inside of the panels. Get a different charge controller though. or you will see Smoke Condensation on the inside of the controller.

(Laughing) Thanks Wooferhound, I absolutely get the point on the controller. All those jacks and switches and digital displays in the HF controller are going to look nice wired into other projects...

Be careful taking it apart!
Saw a new one last week that came with a Chinese spider living happily inside.

Arghhh..

Its not enough to poison our pet food and kids toys. Now they are sending an invasion force of sleeper cell arachnids embedded in our big boys toys.

Sorry but I'm in a goofy mood today.

Cheers.

My 6 have been outside for nearly 2 years in rural west Texas now with no problems except a crack in 1 due to the weight of cats sleeping on it. (they like the warmth).

I have had my HFs outside for through 1 1/2 winters now and they're doing just fine.
I do go out and clean the dust off them with a soft rag and have used rainX on them with no problems.

Hope this helps
