Can someone check I'm on the right lines please?

Before I make any (more?) expensive mistakes.

I write this with some trepidation, no-one like to be told they've got it wrong.
I've read LOTS. The trouble is, the more I read now, the more confused I become, and I'm beginning to get cold feet.

The idea was to build a small turbine, no more than 4' diameter blades.  The plan is for  a dual rotor with the usual 12 pole 9 coils. I have 24  1 inch diameter neos which are n42 and 1/2" thick.

I've made the rotor mount that is going to hold my 6mm thick discs, the airgap will be 12mm at the moment.

My rotor discs are 210mm diameter, and I'm planning on the magnets (centres) sitting at around the 75mm radius.

I'm not sure on the coils, but I think these will be 1.6mm wire (16swg which is close to 14 awg) and around 40 turns.  If I can get away with a lower
diameter, that would be nice. The way I've drawn it at the moment means that the coil hole is slightly larger than the magnet diameter to get the correct spacing and coverage of the magnet by the coils, and this is what is starting to worry me.

You are on the right lines. You have a fair bit of magnet for a 4ft machine and you will likely have to add some line resistance so you needn't worry about squeezing in the largest possible wire size. I think you could use thicker wire.

There is no perfect dimensions for any of this, if someone claims there is, I personally don't believe it. Your discs will be fine. Don't make the hole in the coils bigger than the magnets, any increase in wire length means more resistance and that has far more effect than all this nonsense about coil legs. If you link all the flux then at best all the coil leg spacing will do is change the waveform.

Your coils will not touch each other with your chosen wire size and if you were squeezing the last ounce out of it I would say use thicker wire, but you will be too powerful anyway so it doesn't matter. Should cut in near 300rpm and be fine for 4ft.

wow!  Thanks! A quantum leap and I've finally got it!  I've been thinking all along that I MUST have one side of a coil passing 'N' as the other side passed 'S'.  I see now that it isn't necessary.

Likewise, I've been trying to get the coils to fill all the space; kicking myself now, as I realise I've been a bit dim.

Thanks Flux

Take it easy on the kicking, Capt. Remember nobody is born knowing this stuff. We all have to learn somewhere.
