Wind Will Power Belgian Antarctic Station

Feb 7, 2007 10:42 AM

Proven Energy, maker of small wind turbines, is supplying eight of its 6-kW
turbines for Belgium's Princess Elisabeth Antarctic research station.
Building of the station will take place during the International Polar
Federation's International Polar Year (2007 to 2008) and will enable up to
20 scientists from Belgium and other nations to carry out research on
climate change.
Using wind turbines marks a major change in Antarctic stations, which have
previously relied on diesel generators causing pollution in the ecologically
fragile area.
Diesel sets were deployed because wind turbines were thought not to be
sturdy enough for the harsh environment. Proven's turbines are well suited
to the conditions at the South Pole.
In Antarctica, the average wind speed is 53 mph in winter, with gusts up to
200 mph.
Once installed, the turbines will have to endure some of the most severe
climate conditions on Earth, including temperatures down to MINUS 60 Degrees Celsius while still providing 230 Volts electricity for the station's heating, computers, lights and scientific instruments.

I often wondered why no one was currently using much wind power in arctic regions.
"wind turbines were thought not to be sturdy enough for the harsh environment" ???

From `Mother Earth News, #24- Nov/Dec 1973.

Admiral Byrd set up one of the Jacobs systems at the South Pole in 1933. On June 17, 1955, Richard E. Byrd, Jr., wrote a letter to Mr. Jacobs in which he said:

I thought it might interest you to know that the wind generator installed (by my father)...at the original Little America, was still intact this year after almost a quarter of a century...The blades were still turning in the breeze (and) show little signs of weathering. Much of the paint is intact.

That is not going to happen i think,
because some old people with money that say there view will be destroyed.
Even if the place them far in the sea they will complain :(.

Here in Lommel (Limburg) they have placed 8 windturbines and there are plans for more :).

Nice, if it's like Luven , then the hills are nice and gently rolling. Former employee has family out there with a small farm. Good people, great table wines and coffee:--)

Have you taken the trip up the 19, and looked at all the different 'mills ? up in the Amsterdam ( IJmuiden <-sp?) there is a stretch that becomes the 1? that has a Kilometer long set of solar panels on the right side heading North.
Then there's the part where on the left side, as your heading North, where there solar panels on the right HUGE new 'mills on the left and beyond the mills there's the reactor. Kinda ironic.

Sorry Admin; way off the post here.
