MPPT circuit

Help a simpleton...

So, I've been thinking about how MPPT chargers work.  Or, at least wondering how the work.  The little I've seen says that they're very difficult or expensive to make... but the more I think about them, the more they seem like they're just a switcher which bases the PWM on the input voltage instead of the output voltage.  Am I missing something, or is it really that simple?

Hey,

Not an electronic guru but I thnk you have the MPPT function a little too simplistic.

The spaces in a PWM are the problem. Those spaces transfer little if any power. This is how my C-40 works and it's not an mppt it's PWM.

MPPT's, as I understand them, converts voltage OVER the battery nominal into extra amperage for the given bank voltage. Say a PV is running at 26V+- unloaded. Connect the MPPT to this and a 12V bank. The Bank voltage is at a state that will accept the full power the PV can produce, but not the voltage. The MPPT converts the OVER voltage into extra amps at a voltage the batteries like. Even this is over simple as to the workings of a good one.

I yeild the floor to Flux now :-)

There was a discussion on how they work not long ago. You can find it here
