Old Radial Arm Saw

I found this in one of my gold mines. It whined aloud, wind me into a wind mill. I could not refuse. Even the color was right.

The unit was setup single phase with a start winding 10 amp 120volt. Humm, what shall I do. Machine the rotor and go from there.

16 magnets 2 x 1/5 x 3/16 inches skewed to follow the lamination lines ~ 15 degrees. The corners stick up a little but the clearance is good.

Now for the rewind. Eight of the slots are smaller than the rest so I wound the motor with what I call dual three phase system. The first is a complete 16 wrap three phase with six connections. Star or Delta wired. The second is only half the winds configured into Star.

Front view finished and tested. Not a hit of cogging, with two fingers I can turn the nut. I placed the unit on my drill press and set the speed to 250 rpm. Phase #1 .Wired Star the output is 13 volts. The second phase is 6 volts. At 590 rpm wired Delta the output is 13 volts at 10 amps. The second phase is 13 volts 5 amps.

With a little switching system I should get a unit that will work very well for a good 4' blade system. I will also work on a furling system that will pivot the blades into the vertical. I really like the cooling system on this motor. The slots on the outside of the stator duct the air past the housing. They are sealed from the core. The pivots will also make yaw and furling simple.
Joseph.

Nice looking motor.  Is it from a Lightning Mixer?

Excellent choice of a motor!  The shaft is already prepped to mount a hub!
