My work has a ton of old Magnet Wire ***Didn't Work out***

By valterra, Section Classifieds

I'll be getting a price soon.  Please let me know if you're interested.

As discussed on another thread, my work office has a ton of old magnet wire and will hopefully sell it to me.

There are many, many small (6 lb or so) spools, and a few (70 lb or so) buckets and spools.  There is thick wire (like #8), very thin wire (like #33) and just about everything in between.  They also have aluminum wire (not pictured).  Here are some pictures:

Tub of "small" spools:
http://jeharper.com/wire/IMAGE_00094-1.jpg

Large spools with a small one on top to show size:
http://jeharper.com/wire/IMAGE_00095-1.jpg

Label on one of the 70 lb buckets:
http://jeharper.com/wire/IMAGE_00096-1.jpg

Many have name brands on them.  Many others have faded or dirty labels.  But I believe one company is K&M Magnet Wire Company, and many others have a Westinghouse logo on them.

Anyhow - my work will give me a price.  It's trash to them, and I can't possibly use it all.

So let me know how much you might want, and what size, and I'll see if they have it.

When they give me a price, I'll pass the info on, and you can say Yay or Nay.  Please send me an email to mobile (at) jeharper (dot) com

Thanks!  If you're like me, finding the money for the parts for these gennies is the hardest part.  Hopefully this will be a good deal for everyone.

I hope they give me a reasonable price.  Aluminum wire, I am guessing, will cost you around $1 per pound, if anyone's interested.  Copper of course is another story.

Copper lust is such an ugly thing!
I need to drop the 20 awg request'
and lower the 15 awg to 12 lbs...

When you get pricing I might have a go at 8-10lbs of some 15 or 18AWG. Talk about "drool factor" seeing rolls and rolls of unused wire!!

Hope your work place gives you/us a good deal!

I will get back to you guys as soon as I know something.

This all has to be approved by the big big boss, so I don't know how it'll go.  They could say no or they could demand $10 / lb.

I'm hoping everything goes well here.  When you buy a lot, they tend to ask what it is for.  I plan to tell them the truth - that I am a member of a club of people who are nuts about wind power, solar power, etc., and that they will buy the stuff from me at my cost, provided it is reasonable.  ;)

I don't know why they'd say no, especially if I'm willing to pay scrap prices... but you never know.

Re: My work has a ton of old Magnet Wire (3.00 / 0) (#11)
by valterra on Wed Aug 15, 2007 at 03:46:32 PM MST

My supervisor said he's  got 2 more layers of management to get the blessing from.  He said he needs to look up the price for copper still, and told me that last he saw, copper was more than $3.50 / lb.  I can't make him use a different source... wherever he gets his info from is what he will use.

That being said, they told me to stick what I want on a pallate, and they'll take a look at it.

I don't really want to get into the magnet wire business, so I don't plan on dividing up individual  spools.  Small ones are in the neighborhood of 7 lbs and the large ones are near 70.  I don't have any way of measuring out, for example, 2 lbs for someone.

That being said, some of the spools  are partially used.  One of the #14s for example, has a couple lbs on it maybe.  If everything goes well here, I will itemize what's there.  So far, mostly from memory at this point, the smallest is 33 and the largest is 14.

I took many of them out and sorted them from largest to smallest.  It looks like quantities are lower at both ends, with a ton of #28 in the middle.

If they approve the idea of me purchasing it, I will gather a lot more information about quantities of different sizes.  But I DO know there is a bucket of 14, that there is a ton of 28 and that there is just about every different size between 14 and 33.

Again, this has to be approved by the gods first... it could be a sour deal.  I hesitated even mentioning it originally - didn't want to get everyone all excited for nothing.  But then again, if I don't know what you guys want, I don't know what to stick on my pallate!!!

Valterra;

This is where someone setting up a non profit to receive these type things would make sense.

The company could write off the actual market value of the wire as a charitable donation. The "non profit" redistributes it to the RE experimenters at cost plus a small fee. Any extra $$ can go to goodwill or something.

We did this with our ATV club and it boosted our cash flow enormously. Of course we donate regularly to worthy causes to meet the non profit status bit.

Just an idea for the future.

Cheers.

what part of the world do you live, so i can guestimate shipping?

if there is around 30 lbs of 14 guage wire, i would take that at $3.50 per lb.

if there is some 12 guage let me know, or a similar amount of 13 guage

also if there is any of the really heavy rectangular section stuff, let me know

I'm -guessing- that UPS would be cheaper that the post office.

$3.50 / lb (3.00 / 0) (#22)
by valterra on Fri Aug 17, 2007 at 11:10:04 AM MST

I sorted and counted the small spools.  There are also 45 or so of the LARGE spools or buckets that I will itemize next week.

Here's what there is.  Most of the spools are untouched.  Some have some wire missing.  Of course you will be charged for what the spool ACTUALLY weighs.

Add $5 for me ("processing") is that fair?

Plus shipping of course.  I think those flat rate boxes are big enough for a small spool.

  2. x 18

  4. x 20

There ya go!  Yes, I take Paypal... will post that info later tonight.

AND for full disclosure - they could STILL say No.  I pray they don't.

I also have some spools that aren't  marked.  Is there a way to test it?

Re: $3.50 / lb (3.00 / 0) (#23)
by wdyasq on Fri Aug 17, 2007 at 12:48:44 PM MST

"I also have some spools that aren't  marked.  Is there a way to test it?"

Weight of spool and 'color' of cut wire should be enough to identify copper/aluminum. 'Magnet test' will verify 'not steel'.

Size must be Measured. 'Caliper measure' will be close enough to identify to proper gauge. I suggest any 'unmarked' wire should be sold as '.xxx"  and all wire gauges should be verified, ie. spool marked XX gauge .xxx" diameter. In this method none can complain. "it isn't what I wanted".

Instead of two #18 I would rather have #14 and about the same quantity as two small spools. I think you said that is was in a big spool. If the big spool equals a couple of smaller spools then that is what I would like.

Deadline for FIRST Order (3.00 / 0) (#36)
by valterra on Mon Aug 20, 2007 at 07:08:29 PM MST

Okay guys,

Sorry for all the trouble and the wait.  I've gotten myself all confused about what people want between the emails and the posts, and filtering out "wish list" stuff from actual requests.

I plan to try to get this all done at my work Next week.  So I'll get people's requests weighed, post my PayPal address, etc., very soon.

Here's the people who have confirmed so far:

etownlax - 1 spool #20
Angus - 1 spool #22
rcpilot - 2 spools #18

Everyone else's requests either haven't been received or people are still thinking about it, etc.,  Those 3 mentioned above are the only spools that are on the pallet to be weighed.

If you want any of the spools listed in the big list above, please post your request here, I will set them aside, weigh them, put them on the pallet, and keep track of which ones are gone.

No pressure - just trying to be better organized and actually do this thing, now that the price has been nailed down.

The small spools have been weighing about 10 lbs, FYI.  The large spools / buckets are approx 72 lbs.

Small spools can be shipped within the USA, Priority Mail, for $8.95.

Large buckets exceed the Post Office's 70 lb limit.  Looks like UPS is in the neighborhood of $45 - $50

Okay guys, let 'er rip!  Tell me what you want so's we can all start buildin!!!

Valterra,

But I don't appear to be on the list.????????????
Remember these emails from 16 August?????

Valterra,
Please add me to the list of buyers.
I will take 6 full spools (small) or 1 large (70 lb) of anything from 13 to 15 gauge., with my
preference starting at 13 and moving to the smaller sizes.

Have you given any thought to how we will get the money to you??
Are you signed up with Paypal???
Just want to be prepared, so if the bosses say "go for it", we can get the money to you as fast as possible.

Josh,
Sorry I didn't explain properly.
I meant anything from 13 thru 15 gauge, so 14 gauge is perfect.
If I remember correctly, the picture of the bucket said 72 pounds.
Works for me!!!
