We like beer. One of the new people at the meeting built a Axial Flux Wind Turbine from Hugh Piggott's plans.

January 11th 2007
Good morning
I already got Nell to do the dishes for me this morning. Dang I should have gotten her to do the story too. Thanks honey. She is off to work so I guess it is up to me. I attended the NMSynergy meeting last night. Very interesting group. We are part of the NMSEA or Solar Energy Association of New Mexico. NMSynergy is the group which puts on the Synergy Fest each Spring. I will be helping with the Synergy Fest this year although I don't know for sure what I can do that would be a help. We are having another meeting this Sunday to brainstorm with others interested in producing this years Synergy Fest. The main promoters are graduating from NMHU this year so new leaders will need to be trained and groomed for the Synergy Fest. I don't see myself as a leader, so I asked them if they had something for morons to do to help.

Seeing first hand the current mover and shaker, Justin Kaysing's energy level, I can tell his is going to be a difficult act to follow. Plus, he is very active at Highlands University, constantly making connections with students, student senate and faculty for support from the college. Plus, there is a gigantic sponsorship base, I see that not only do local merchants give generously to the fest, New Belgium Brewing Co. also gave quite a bit of money. Hmmm, this is the same beer joint that in effect sponsors the otherpower wind turbine shop up n Colorado. Wheels are turning in my head that I didn't even know I had.

We like beer. Justin is going to ask NMHU president if a beer vendor could have a booth this year. I think this would be awesome. Nothing gargantuan, perhaps a Renaissance look, a little thatched roof booth and whatnot. Oh yeah, they're going to be happy they have my input for this year's event. Also, this Sunday we'll be talking about bands. I would like to see John Gold's bluegrass band this year. I am pretty excited to get involved with the Synergy Fest. We had a really good time last year. Yeah, a Renaissance festival look, we all dress up in pointed toed slippers with little bells, it'll be fun. Right. you can see NMSynergy website here: http://www.synergyfest.com/

One of the new people at the meeting built a Axial Flux Wind Turbine from Hugh Piggott's plans. Well I don't know if he is new, I'm new, but I just met him. Eric is a contractor building solar and green residential and commercial. He wrote to me a couple of weeks ago about a WVO truck he has. It is a pleasure to meet him. I asked about the turbine. He said a buddy of his is building these wind turbines in remote areas of Nicaragua. While this friend was in the states last Summer he stayed with Eric and held a small workshop and built his wind turbine. It is a 85 foot monopole tower with 10 foot props. He thought it was around 500 watts, but he hasn't turned it on yet. He said he ran short of funds and was unable to get an inverter. I asked him if he meant the rectifier? He said the rectifier was up by the alternator. Hmm, I thought the rectifier was on the bottom so we could shunt the props and shut the wind turbine down. He said that it is shunted, however it was done, because without a load (batteries to charge) it would spin out of control, which it isn't doing.

Cool though, someone here has one of these wind turbines like we are going to build. Yeah, I like this group. I'm meeting lots of new, like-minded and thus very interesting people. One direction the group wants to head is setting up an energy consultant to do waste analysis on homes, especially low income households. What does this mean? We will help people who can not afford it themselves to insulate their homes. This fits quite nicely with ideas we have been kicking around at Peace and Justice committee group. Now with the connection to NMSEA we can get help lobbying Santa Fe to make provisions to help people make their homes more efficient. I've been soapboxing this for a long time; The road to sustainability is through reduction of energy use, not alternative energies. How we got here is we were talking in the last meeting about retrofitting passive solar to existing homes. This we all agreed must be preceded by basic energy reductions around the house.

I like the way this group thinks. We want to help people who may not know a problem exists. We quickly whittled the process into something workable.
Sure we would like to see photovotaics on every house in the southwest, but first let's take a look a the seals around the doors and windows.

I'll keep you updated
Obviously

Uknow I was thinking about Brian today, I can see how my remark about not needing a wagonfull of battery's behind an EV, could be mis- advised. Nevertheless one must be somewhat 'thick-skined' around here. bla, bla, blaaa anyway, I can imagion that theres not much space on a 4wheeler ATV, for battery's. Brians statment does make sense in the regard to the suggestion...

Is this what all this is about? If so, im sorry, for causing the board all this trouble.BUT I MUST SAY 'Brian' , YOU ARE ACTING LIKE A -"johnny cool pants"-.

Dear "Boss"
I believe in "reduce the use" like you, but I also believe in alternative fuels, too.

However, even if we are both not on the exact same frequency, I think we are both going in the same direction.

The fact that you are actually doing something, means I automatically respect you and your efforts. Keep up the effort!

P.S. I had 6 beers before I wrote this! (Thank goodness for "spell-check"!)

You're cracking me up, JW. ;) No more beer for you!

Brian-  the "Peace and Justice" committee...is this a local chapter of Medea Benjamin's "United for Peace and Justice", or something else?

About the rectifier-- that can go anywhere the builder feels like; top of tower, bottom of tower, power shack. One disadvantage of top of tower, is that when the magic smoke falls out of the rectifier, the tower has to come down to fix it.

JW called you "Johnny cool pants"...google search the board for that. Lots of laughs to be had in the archives.  I wonder what happened to him?

Carry on, and may I have a refill?

The Committee is a sub group of the Las Vegas Center for Peace and Justice
I believe so, http://www.unitedforpeace.org/groups.php?state=NM although this page doesn't list us the following does.

I did a search for "Johnny cool pants" too many hits, Do I want to know what the gist was? Or it feels like I had better leave it alone.
Maybe I'll post my newsletter titled "booze and mechanic don't mix well." in the diary section this morning.

Bunch of nonsense, I see. Thanks for enlightening me, David. I like to add humor to my posts, but the thrust is waste and environmental footprint reduction.  I've been doing my morning newsletter for eight years. I've heard it all. Most people find it easier to ridicule my efforts than join in the fun and personal well-being of becoming sustainable. I love that I was invited to post my chronicle here, under diaries. I feel there is more hope reading and writing with people with similar goals.

Hi Brian - comments about the wind turbine and rectifiers...

'He said a buddy of his is building these wind turbines in remote areas of Nicaragua.'

Yes, the Blue Energy folks.  They participate here sometimes and there is a good chance that we will go down there soon for a couple of weeks and help out.

'He said he ran short of funds and was unable to get an inverter. I asked him if he meant the rectifier? He said the rectifier was up by the alternator. Hmm, I thought the rectifier was on the bottom so we could shunt the props and shut the wind turbine down. He said that it is shunted, however it was done, because without a load (batteries to charge) it would spin out of control, which it isn't doing.'

It makes some sense to put the rectifiers up top if you have built the 5 phase alternator according to Hughs plans, otherwise you have 5 wires coming down the line.  Rectifiers also get better cooling up there.  The 'stop' switch still works but you need a bypass diode.

The trouble with rectifiers at the top...  when you shut it down then they see a big surge in current, especially if the machine is running fast at the time.  If you blow the rectifiers at the tower top then you have a free spinning turbine and no way to stop it.  Another problem -  especially with the 5 phase machine, it's not that unlikely in my opinion that you could just blow 1, or 2 rectifiers and you may not notice it on the ground, the symptoms would be more current flowing through fewer phases and blades spinning faster - which, could result in later furling, stator burnout - or ruining more rectifiers.  With wind turbines one failure usually leads to another etc...
Mine for example, in my most recent posting.  I caught it in time, but a simple broken connection could've easily resulted in stator burnout - or -later furling, the good chance of a blade failure - a blade failure (especially on mine where the blades weigh over 30 pounds each) will lead to things running badly out of balance which in some cases could put the tower at risk!

One more comment for JW and other folks...
Brian (Boss) is in my opinion a real 'doer' with very real and interesting projects, and has nothing in common with 'Johnny cool pants'.  He writes a 'news letter' and asked me if he could post it here in diaries, I am grateful that he does!  We really enjoyed his visit up here last month...

I havent been reading as much of, the many posts here on the board, basically Ive gotten lazy.

By the time I read the very next post, I realized I needed to do somemore reading. By the time I had done that, all I could do was shut off the faucet.

I just now, managed to get my foot out of my mouth.

I think that I have learned the hardway, you cant assume anything around here. The whole time I thought, Boss, was some major league baseball player. Even if he was, what should that matter.  Guys, thanks for being so good about all this. By the time I realized it, it was too late, I used to read 4 hours of this board, everyday. I have made several mistakes, by not reading enough or carfully enough. My apologizes, it took this long to get back on the board. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I BROUGHT UP jcp, it just popped into my head. Im going to shut up while I still can.

Where are the newsletters? (3.00 / 0) (#13)

Hello Brian,

I also enjoy your posts and have began looking forward to them each day.

So the question is, why haven't you posted one for the last few days?

I checked your website but couldn't find your recent newsletters.

Take care and hope all is well!

Lonnie

Well thank you Lonnie
I didn't post it because I wasn't sure it was well received when off topic. Also for the last year or so I have taken weekends off.
Since you asked I'll post yesterday's now.

Brian,

I hope I havent caused too much trouble for you. I think it would be cool, if you made a link to some sort of 'bio' next to your picture. As is often the case consistency is paramount. Alot of us around here, have been here for at least 5years, it seems like.

What im getting at, is you are more complex, than the average person who starts a new account here. Im the past people have added links to there own-site with there sig, like your picture.

I couldnt help but to notice, you have avoided that with your participation here.

I think it would help alot, for someone like me, to know what Dan does.

I understand completely that you do not intend to 'showboat'.

Many others have successfully promoted there own site here. Its worked out well for many. I think you should do the same. I dont link to my-own site flashsteam.com for various reasons.

But, what im gathering here, is that you have much to offer, on the topic of wind turbines.

I like to think that after writing thousands of newsletters I have learned to say what I mean, but the truth is after that many letters I have a tendency to not worry too much what any one message says, knowing  there is always tomorrow for amendments.  Smiles.

I wish I had more to offer in a technical sense for the fieldlines forums.  I belong to a couple of mechanical forums where I post often, because I know what I'm talking about there, same is true for the biodiesel forums. This stuff here has me very interested, but until I learn what is what and get more experience, I'll stick to the diary section.

I have been working on my own web page and BMN forum but it seems I haven't the knack for these new web based editors. In the two days since my buddy set it up for me I have managed to totally hose it.
www.outfitnm.com
indeed it had all sorts of stuff about yours truly
Hopefully it will again in the coming week

Hi Brian,

"This stuff here has me very interested, but until I learn what is what and get more experience, I'll stick to the diary section. Boss"

Dont worry too much about that, if you dont ask question's in the active 'everthing' catagory, you wont learn as much, as fast.

On the otherhand, geting all Philosophical, outside of your diary might get you in trouble. Other than that, I see no problems.

Hang in there for the long haul, as you have been doing well...

Cheers

At my age I like to think there is nothing left to learn. On the other hand, I used to wish I could wake up just one morning and rest on my laurels, no surprises, let all my accumulated experience slide me through just one complete day... Never happened. Damnit.
Just jerking around...
I love forums, I belong to enough to know it is better to not comment unless I have actual experience. Opinions get me in trouble. Want to talk about automotive electronics?
I try to imagine which is my favorite section here. It is a toss up between Wind & Solar, but then again there are too many areas I haven't made it to yet, to gauge
