Skystream 3.7

dead stop....

Hi: Another one. I have a neighbor at 3 miles that bought a Skystream 3.7 which is grid tie. I go by his location many times a week and today I pulled over for awhile to watch his turbine. The wind today was in the 5 to 12mph range with occasional 20mph gusts. Anyway, it was stopped then slowly began to turn as the wind picked up. The 3.7 is suppose to start at 8mph according to specs.. It turned faster and faster and after about 10 seconds and I would guess 2 RPS rotation speed it came to an abrupt halt in about 1/4 sec. I watched for awhile and it did this every time. Again the wind was not real strong. My guess as to what was happening was that as it spun up the electronics was watching for a min voltage, then sync'd it and cut in the inverter at a min load, which was still to much for the low wind speed and the turbine just stopped. Does anybody have thoughts or experiences on this situation regardless of the brand of grid tie turbine..??..

Skystreams are having problems now, apparently caused by cold weather. Check the awea small wind yahoo group for more details.

It sounds like the brushes are not making good connect with the slip rings, or some other opening in the circuit, and the electronic auto-braking is stopping it to protect the electronics.

I have an Air-X that would do the very some thing!  The manufacturer stated that it would need to be run for approximately 60 - 100 hours under normal operating conditions for brushes and bearings to reach peak performance.

I don't know how new your neighbor's Skystream is, but it may still be in it's break-in period, and that is most likely the cause of what are seeing.

Hi: I had sent a message to Skystream and they replied back saying they are having software issues... so anything is possible at that point I guess....

I have never posted here but have been following these forums for quite a while. The Skystream's use of a slotless brushless alternator has really peaked my interest lately. They appear to be getting alot of recognition for their concept, which was developed along with NREL. Does anyone have any photos of the Skystream setup they can share?

Thanks,
JD

I have a question. If you were watching your neighbors skystream and it seemed to have some problems.. why wouldn't you ask your neighbor? I would check to see who installed this turbine. There have been some turbines that have been installed incorrectly and possibly was wired incorrectly. I would ask the source and see what is going on with your neighbor's turbine, they may have your exact answer.
