Smoke damage

Just another task

Woke up this morning to this.

It was a recptical for the buts of my resident smoker, which caught fire fanned by winds and caused a bit of damage. The two conduits are power from the inverters and a cable returning to the battery shed for small power.

Dug down and exposed the incommer, problem is they were burnt at ground level.

Two new cables patched in until full restitution can be made.

The other cables in the pics are com's cables bringing data from the battery shed.
I will be able to place a junction box a little out from the wall and be suficiantly above ground. Amazingly the power stayed on, the feed from the inverter(25m) is a 4mm sq cable protected by a 20A MCB the other is a 2.5mm sq feed to the battery shed from the fuse board which has earth leakage protection and a 15a MCB. MCB = minature circuit breaker

By "full restitution" do you mean he/she will be expected to cover the costs of fixing it?

Might I suggest [in hindsight] that the butt can has a small diameter long tube that the butts drop through to the can. That way they are covered sufficiently to prevent wind from fanning the mess into life. Also keeps folks from depositing other flammables in it, too. Emptying it every decade or so helps, also, I heard.

Glad the shed didn't ignite on you.

Tom it's testermant to the self extinguishing properties of correct equipment, it's amazing that it continued to conduct without tripping any protection.

I will continue to refrain from commenting on smokers, it is not plesant.

Sorry to see that ,allan.

My brother got a couple of local council water meter pits from the workers. they are nice units,he uses them to house his earth rods for his radio gear..
Might be handy for your 'repair" .Also self-amalgamating tape is waterproof..

G'day Allan,

your local electrical wholesaler will have 3M Epoxy kits
for doing resin filled joints underground. AS/NZ3000 says all
joins underground must be cast in epoxy. It guarantees that you
will not have water problems in the join.

Good to see that electrical PVC conduit is truly self extinguishing.

Hi sPuDd, those were my first thoughts, but I will be able to intercept the conduit such that I will have a two gang IP56 box above ground, just.

The main incommer I sholud/will be able to heat the orange/grey conduit join apart and work from there. A soildered join with self amalgamating tape as bruce said will make all safe and water proof.

Not sure what to do with the smoker though, it could have been much worse there is still much dry grass that I have sprayed off to get ready for summer, together with strong winds it was a disaster waiting to happen.

G'day Allan,

probably still worth filling the J-box with
3M anyway. You know how it goes - do the job once
and sleep well. You could also use a $5 tube of
silicone & pump it full. At least there will be no
chance of water ingress, and silicone is an awesome
insulator for the joins.

there's a relatively new product out called an e-cigarette, no heat, no smoke... still releases nicotine without the tar & chemicals, a bit of a pricey outlay but cheaper than real cigs in the long run
