Digital Multimeters $2.09

That's right, two dollars and nine cents

3-1/2 digits, does all the stanard V, I, R measurements plus NPN and PNP transistor test, diode check.  9-volt battery included.  Price good through October 4 at Harbor Freight.

At this price, you can just integrate them as monitors and power them from the device being measured.

I've bought these bargain DMMs before.  You'll get maybe 1 out of 10 that has a problem, so if you buy a bunch, check them out before the exchange period (30 days) runs out.

You'll need to print the coupon I've attached below.

I would check before accepting the posters claim you can "power them from the device being measured "before you buy. If that is your goal, anyway.

uh , no I wouldn't try powering those from the device(;-))
There's a 9V'er in there. cheapo but it'll last about a week of steady use.

The directions that come with it, say to use of equal or better battery.
They are Nice though.
The cables, if you twist them, too many time will come off at the instlated end, cheapo alligator clips from same store will work to repair :-)

Hi Bruce,

The way to power these off the measurement is to use a series regulator.  If you are monitoring a 12-V battery bank, just regulate down to 9 volts.  Current drawn is so little that you probably wouldn't even need to turn it off.  It's probably below the self-discharge rate of most 100 AH lead-acid batteries.  The regulator will need no heatsinking at this low current, so it can just be stuck in the space where the 9V battery used to go.

I agree about the cheapness of the probe leads.  That is one of the "flaws" that I sometimes find in initial checkout.  The lead will become open-circuited or intermittent at one end or the other after a little bit of rough use.  Luckily, the connectors on the meter accept standard banana plugs, so you can hook up with jsut about anything.  The other flaw I sometimes see is dark patches on the LCD display.  Doesn't affect the measurement, but it's a cosmetic defect.  You have 30 days to exchange any defectives, that's why I recommend checking them all as soon as you get them home.

Hi, I have used this meter and found that the low input impedance makes the device no better than a logic tester. You can not trust the readings.
Have a good one ;>

Sounds like pilot error to me, input impedance is about a megohm on DC volts.  If you use this meter to measure a 12-volt battery, the current drawn will be twelve one-thousandths of a milliamp - hardly enough to disturb any readings.

I find they read nearly the same as my BK Precision 350A, for most readings.

The only common problems I have had is low factory batteries, and issues with the leads melting somewhere between 25 and 150A when testing battery voltage while the meter is set to 10A.  And that is why I use them (only $3 per major operator malfunction).

Good coupon.

I've done that one too.  I bought a batch of them at $1.99 at Harbor Freight a few years ago, between giving a few away, losing a few, and cooking a few - usually by leaving the lead in the 10A slot, now I only have one of those left.  Rich

I've used Auto Goop gel to patch the leads after they fail. The wire lead is spot welded to the banana pin and then the thing is dipped in vinyl (red or black) at the factory.

If a lead fails, cut open the meter end, strip, wrap and solder the lead and then add Goop.

The new right angle connector is the old plug (hole keeper).

Great idea - I hadn't investigated to see which end had failed, I've just been replacing the leads with another banana lead because I have a "bunch" laying around.

The first thing I did with my 1986 Tandy DVM was clip the plugs and solder directly to the meter main board. Twenty-two years and never lost-damaged-pulled out yet; if there are multiple sockets choose wisely or add multiple leads....

They are handy multimeters.

As far as "cooking them", getting your your 10A and 1A settings backwards....  check the fuse in the meters.  You may be able to resurrect the meters by replacing the fuse.

However, some of mine have been a bit erratic on the 20V setting (which is where it stays most of the time, and unfortunately is exact opposite to the 10A setting).  Usually it will settle down, but I'm about ready to track down a more professional unit.

They could also use a little more wire in the leads.  The probes have fallen off of most of mine now.

Year before Last Christmas I gave them out as a stocking stuffer to all my brothers and sisters and family members (about 10). Paid more than $2.09 each!-)
Several asked me why? I don't know how to use it.
I said I know you do not know how to use one, it's so you have one next time I come over and try to fix something and don't have mine!
All since have found a use for them, showed how to use to test batteries. Voltage is not the best test but it does tell you if it's dead! Even my wife uses one!!

Fried one so far, rest replaced fuse to get going again. At this price not worth fixing...

Have fun,
Scott.
