Need Local Wind Data?  Ham Radio to the Rescue!

As a young ham, I thought APRS (Automatic Position Reporting System) was just a fad.  Well, I was wrong.

If you need local weather (especially wind) information in your area, check out the CWOP Search engine:

http://www.wxqa.com/search.htm

Type in your city and state, and hit SEARCH.  If you can't find your city, choose a large one near you.

When the database comes up, click STNS ("Near Stations") to display a list of all the CWOP stations near that geographical location.

Find one closer to where you live, and click its callsign.

There you go!  I found a fellow ham close to me who has a full weather station.  The wind part is updated every few minutes!

If you know a little (a LITTLE) cgi, you can "hack" the URLs and get data for longer periods of time.  I have 100 days' worth on my blog.
