Aparent design fault

For about 6-8 weeks now, summer in my part of the world I run a cool room off Re for my fruit, now I am making advances each year but am not totaly Re for this period. We are having good winds but having just had 5 sucessive days at or over 40 deg. C it's a bit hard on the cool room.

Last summer my old Robin diesel gave trouble, fuel pump rack liked to jam, it was about an hours work to remove the fuel pump and free it up. But an hour in mid season I did not have so fell back to the ever reliable petrol Honda, big increase in fuel bill.

So I put my hand deep in my long pocket and drew out in excess of $2600 Australian to buy a new Robin DY27. Ran for a while then the aluminuim barbed fitting that delivers fuel to the fuel pump, paralell thread with locking nut kept comming loose. Tried removing the fuel pump to remove the barbed fitting cleaned it up replaced the fitting into fuel pump and then lock tighted the locking nut, all to no avail.

So now lock nut is stripped, Allan needs the motor so reluctantly I will have to remove the fuel pump again and apply thread tape to the fitting, I know big danger, I can see it too strip fuel pump, strip injector but it must run.

Possible alternative is find a brass barbed fitting and bodgy it up, shame realy as they are good motors just seems to have a design fault. Of course the Robin Subaru web sit has no contact point where one may er shall I say inform them.

Yes I will buy a new fitting but it will undoubtably have too come ex Japan so by the time I receive it it's all over red rover for this peak season.

So would I buy another Robin..... no way when time permits I will mount the little Lister to the alternator, at least that is reliable and I may say runs much much quiter.

Allan steps down off his soap box.

Not sure where you meant this to go but I slipped it into "Mechanical" as it is a closer fit there. It actually is more like a Diary but you old farts get a pass occasionally. TomW.

OK post script, the problem was a broken fitting into the fuel pump, it is a double barbed fitting. Supply in on the side and bleed out on the top, this is an efective way of bleading the system when it has run out of fuel.

Now I was unable to remove the broken part so I hand balled it to the company who sold me the motor, too their credit they removed the part and supplied a new fitting for the cost of the fitting.

But these fuel pumps are non servicable, I asked for a price on a new one, so far not forthcomming.
Now this means either they have not failed so far or ..........

Anyway my Robin is now running again, but it is very aparent to me that the fuel pump is the weak ling as it was on the older modle I had.

I can only hope if you own one it runs well and long for you, for me I think a Honda diesel next time.
