First attempt

I am making my first attempt at building a Garbogen.  I have followed Jerry's instructions to the letter. I have traced all the beginning points and ends of the 4 "start" coils and 4 "run" coils.  I have cut the wires going from the ends of the #2 coils and the beginnings of the #3 coils.  I have connected the #1 beginning with the #3 beginning, and then the end of #2 with the end of #4.  My problem is when I perform the magnet test, with the coils energized using either a "D"cell battery or a 9volt battery, the magnet is always attracting to the iron and never repelling.  I keep the same face(pole) of the magnet facing the iron as I go from coil to coil.  In the attached picture I am just showing the "Run" connections and using the word start for the beginning of the coil.  I am unsure if I am performing the magnet test incorrectly or I connected something wrong.  As always any help is appreciated.

Try a larger battery like 6 volt ....4 D size
in series....you're probably not creating enough
magnetism in the coil.
 The magnet test will only work with a small
battery if it were an air core coil.?
  I may be wrong.....

Otto, What type of magnet are you using for you test magnet? Can you try a compass and see if you get the same results.

I just tried the compass test and I believe it worked.  I was not able to stick the compass down into the stator but I ran it along the top of the stator. The needle would rotate as I moved the compass from coil to coil.  If that is how the compass test should work, is this enough evidence that I have things wired correctly?

I tried a 12 motorcycle battery and it gives stronger results than the smaller batteries.  The coils were getting warm.  I taped the magnet to a stick and if I stay more towards the center of the opening, to about an inch away from the iron, I do have attraction and repelling, but if I come closer than about an inch, the magnet will eventually attract to the iron in front of each coil.

You're doing fine.

When the magnet is somewhat away from the pole piece the attraction and repulsion you feel are what you're looking for:  coil-induced pole piece magnetization working against the probe magnet.  Use these forces to figure out which poles on the stator are which and whether you've got your coils hooked up in the directions you think you should.

When the (STRONG) magnet is too close to the stator pole pieces it induces more magnetization into them than the current in the coils does.  So you always feel an attraction.  (It's stronger when the coil magnetization and the induced-by-the-probe-magnet magnetization add, weaker when they subtract.  But the difference probably isn't enough to feel.)

The weaker magnet of a compass won't induce enough magnetization to foul the test.  On the other hand it will also be sensitive enough to detect residual magnetization in the stator core.  That may confuse the issue when you're probing a pole piece that "isn't magnetized" by the coils.  So you're better off using a stronger handheld probe magnet, where you can feel the strength of the attraction and repulsion, and hold it far enough away for the test to work.
