loading winch

can someone tell me how I could work out the lifting load for my 10 ft dual rotor so I can get a suitable winch
my tower is 20 ft of 5" plus 5 ft stepdown and the ginpole is 20 ft of 3"
it goes up and down smoothly without the turbine just by pulling on ropes
I want to have a good margin for error
I hope I have  sufficient info

thanks    windspeed

I have used a 12v 3000 pound winch to pull my pole up. I have put 120 pounds of weight on my pole and had the winch welded to my truck and it has no problem at all pulling it up. I think that harbor freight has a winch that is 1 ton for about seventy dollars, dont see why that wouldn't work.

Check with an ATV dealer or maybe get one from a Junk yard. Get the real weight of everything together and ngo from there? Just some ideas.

thanks for the comments
I was wondering how the ginpole affects the actual loading
I assume it is more load than a direct lift
curious......

watch out for the real cheap winchs some will work fine others don't have reverse
if its a planatary gear it will not hold the load some better ones have breaks built in a worm gear is self locking also some are rated for rolling load others for drag load just some stuff to think about
I would think the warn brand 1700 pound  from northern tool might  work good its worm gear and you can put a pulley at the top to double the power of any winch
Good Luck

You can't double the power of a winch with a pulley, sorry. take it easy

Sure you can. Unless we are talking some semantics. Pull 2X the cable and have 2X the straight line pull on the lift. Winch still needs to be rated for the weight. Otherwise block and tackles wouldn't be much use would they? Same principle as gearing. Think about it.

Just from here.

Technically, you can't increase the power (not unless you add extra energy). Due to friction in the pulleys you'll actually lose some power. But:

P = F * v (power = force * velocity)

By using a pulley you lower the speed of hoisting, and, as power must remain the same (excluding frictional losses in the pulley), F increases. That means you can lift heavier things. But slower. And power of the winch motor can stay the same.

</lecture>

BTW, an easy way to calculate the new load rating of the hoist is by counting the number of steel cables from which the load hangs. When you use one pulley (near the load), it'll hang on 2 cables, hence load rating has doubled. Same principle applies when using n pulleys. Count the number of cables and multiply by the rated load of the original single cable. The above excludes friction but is a close enough approximation.

Don't ya love math & physics ?

Peter.

It's kind of semantics but it's an important point. Thanks dinges, for explaining it so well. take it easy

For sure you can without fancy math and exact numbers if you have your pulley at the load and return the cable back to the winch or ancor point making a v of less than 120 degrees if roughly doubles the pull cuts cable speed in half and cable breaking load in half of course you winch needs to be up to it works on the tow truck every day(;

Another point is most winches are rated at first layer pull as the cable builds up its almost like a variable gear on a 8000 pound winch with 50 ft of 3/8 on the drum is only good for about 5000 pounds
Oh well Im rambling on  Have a good night

Something like this would be the ticked.
