Bladecalculators kill human intelligence

thrust yourself only

Many of you have a 'favorite bladecalculator',a magic box that say you what to do,kind of oracle maybe.Well,everyone his religion,hope I don't hurt anyones in this matter.

I stole a picture from someones files,this is nothing personel,it's just a wonderfull illustration of what mean.The maker of this blades did a great job and I thank him many times for sharing his work.

At the moment I saw this blades I found them quite weird,and maybe I was not the only one.But no one of the commentators had real objections,No reason for that if the bladecalculators tell to do it like this.

But the image of these blades kept wandering in my head and it took quite a time before I found out what's wrong with it.

The profile of the airfoil is relatif to a circular movement,so the profile must be wrapped around a cilinder.
This is not of real importance at greater diams,but nearer the hub this is taking much importance.

Now,I won't say that there isn't any 'intelligent calculator'that take in account this complication.But the only way to know this is when the maker of the calculator explains  how he is calculating.As long as he doesn't do this,the possibility that the maker of the calculator is more stupid than you are is real.

Calculating the angle off attac,anyone can learn it.Be the blades wide at the root and thin at the top,the inverse or equal width over all the length,can be a religious question,but a little understanding is worth more than a thousend calculators.

cheers,
jaap

Rockhead;

You really should give credit to the owner of that photo as long as you already said you "borrowed" it.

I can't remember who did it just now but I did find it interesting at the time.

Blade crunchers are just another tool. How someone uses that tool determines its usefulness not the tool itself.

Anyway, don't take me wrong. I think you are wrong wrong wrong about calculators [and by extension, tools in general].

Some guys can make an Uzi with some wire and a welder, others couldn't make a club with an entire shop and access to all possible materials. Can't blame the tools for the users' deficiencies.

Vawt fellow;

Yeah, WilliB I bet thats right.

Funny, folks go and "get a life" occasionally and just leave us dangling.

Hope its nothing serious or anything. He had some interesting postings.

His last post was back around Christmas, looks like:

"You really should give credit to the owner of that photo as long as you already said you "borrowed" it."

Well, I did but I didn't want to mention his name,for not giving the the impression to want to drag down a person.Wrong.
Willib,thanks a thousend times!!!

"Anyway, don't take me wrong. I think you are wrong wrong wrong about calculators [and by extension, tools in general]."

And what about Willibs blades?If you really think they are right,I'll make you a small model to show what a helix look like.
Lot of work for only illustrating my statement,but I think it's worth the effort,promised.(be patient)

cheers,

brain;

And what about Willib's blades?

If you read my comment you would have seen I said they looked interesting to me at the time.

Waiting for the hardware and patiently, at that.

I am not much of a builder type so I try to withhold saying much about actual processes.

I think I see where you are going with your idea but do not quite understand your issues with blade calculators. I think folks should use every resource at their disposal to accomplish things, however.

I guess I find it just a little tough to take folks seriously who have certain "odd" nicknames. "Stone Brain" is one of those to me. I know its judging a book by its cover but humans are strange animals.

Here it is.A fun exercice with clay(much faster and easier then 3-D modelling on the computer).Not perfect but it looks a bit like a helix.A perfect wooden version is on my todo-list now.

I you read my posting you should understand what I have against bladecalculators.You don't have to agree with me though.

Yes 'stonebrain' is ridiculous.I'm stuck with it now.
I'm a very serious person though.

kind regards,
Jaap

if it looks right it probably is right. as someone points out a chopped up lump of pallet wood will turn in a gale. the clever bit is getting some power out of it at low winds. being as most of us dont have wind tunnels a bit of maths helps a lot. all the blade calculator programs do is make the maths easier. you could do it all with a abacus if you wanted to,but being as we all have access to computers its  a lot easier to use them to do the maths for you. interesting design in the pic. will go and check it out some more.

cheers

I know where you are coming from.  I've been using a circuit design simulator lately.  It's fun, but I also realize that I may be wasting my time as I am totally losing sight of such issues as input impedance, output impedance, and impedance matching.  Even the gain of the circuit as an amplifier can get lost with the simulation.  It's too easy to change circuit values.  I have to step back occasionally and think about what I'm doing.  I can analyze the circuit on paper any time I want for whatever characteristics I need to know, but it's easy to get sucked in by the simulation.

I don't use the blade calculators and probably never will, as using them doesn't tell you what they are based on.  I prefer to do my own designs and make my own trade offs.

well you know what they say about simulation. its like m*s*b*tion too much of it and you think its the real thing;-))
 apologies to the easily offended.
