Chinese VAWT generator for sale (pics)

I've included a bunch of pics of this interesting design

I bought this in hopes of experimenting with it but I have other projects that have priority. I paid $360 for this and would like to get just that plus shipping out of it.

This design is for a low rpm turbine. The housing revolves. There are six mounts on the housing for the blades.

The stated specs are 500 watts at 200rpm at 36vdc and 14Amps. I don't know these to be true since I did not test it at speed but it does generate a couple of volts from hand turning in either direction.

The company that developed this has been great and they have other housings and power output models but would like to sell in larger quantities than onesy twosies so if there is some interest from several people we could get together and buy a lot.

Here are the pics of the innards:

Hmm a couple of things come to mind  no VAWT  install senerio though . But since it's an Olympic year I won't be a smart a... 200 rpm is out of VAWT range I 'd say. Run it up and see where the power band is . Air core is nice that winding rack  puts the coils too far away from the action . You could rewire it easy enough wooooo  .

I think you'll find its a iron core ( oh no, not an iron core, the losses would be hugh! ). It looks like a ceiling fan with magnets fitted, I wonder if it cogs or if they have arranged the magents in a way to reduce any startup cog.
Its an interresting setup, I wonder how much they cost to purchase by themselves without the rest of the windmill. If they are cheap enough and they do make 500 watts at 200 rpm then they may be worth further research.

I would have to agree, it is an iron core.  I have one similar, 500 watt in a smaller package.  Actually it looks a bit thinner but larger diameter than yours.  They are an off spring of the electric hub motors.  Mine had a significant amount of drag but did not cog.  I machined the stator back .030 total and it made a big difference without degrading the performance.

The only real problem I see with them is the hollow shaft for the wires.  The tube instead of a solid shaft takes a considerable amount of strength away from the unit.

Nice unit... where did you get that one?

Yeah that shaft would be a problem. If you could drive that shaft out of the center without cracking the alloy, maybe by heating it, then it looks like a much larger shaft could be used, with larger bearings and new end plates of course. The shaft could come out both ends, so you could run a couple of these things on the one turbine. Then you could series the outputs to half the cut in speed, or parallel them up to double the current.

But only if they are cheap enough to source, of course.

Hi Tecker
I think China likes to sell us stuff just to see how gullible we are.

i can't tell for sure, but is the stator air core?
it appears like it is made of some form of phrenolic or plastic
splined to the aluminum spoked hub, but

maybe that is just a dip or coating, and there is really a laminated
core in there?

does it cog at all?

if it is a laminated iron core, might be interesting to see how it
performs.

if it is air cored would seem to me like alot of gap and no return for
the flux?

tell us more!

what size blades diameter is it made to work with

i would agree that it is not likely well suited to a vertical machine
but might be interesting with a horizontal setup

i can't imagine it being a very large blade set, the shaft mount looks a bit
on the light side to me.

interesting design though

Well thats a shame, this was proving to be an interresting thread.

Tony could you provide a link to the pics or resize them down a bit.

I'll have to open it up to see what the core is. It weighs around 25lbs or so. Probably air core.

I apologize for over sizing the pics. Some were over 150K and there were a lot.
I probably should have posted this in classifieds too but I was hoping to get the impressions of the brain trust.

Here is one pic and links to the rest:

I know it's an old thread but I'll ask the question, what prevents the coils from overheating? What is dissipating the heat created?

Just a wondering mind.
