looking for some direction or suggested reading

for the last several years i have been looking far and wide for books on
power electronics, topics of inverters, buck/boost converters and that sort of thing
specifically igbt and power mosfet technology, how they are used and what is needed to use them in useful circuits.

i can find engineering text, but one has to have a degree in engineering to be able to get much from them.

what i am looking for are books that have some detail explanation, sample circuits for drivers and how they are used to control mosfets and igbt's

what i don't want is some book that is written by a phd for other phd's in quantum
theory that is heavy on math and very light on real world applications.

somewhere there are books written for industrial applications that cover this sort of thing and i figure maybe i can adapt some of that for what i want to do.

the reason i know they exist is i found one such book and i am looking for more like it.

any direction would be appreciated.

A book I purchased recently is:

Power Supply Cookbook (2nd Edition) by Marty Brown.

One of the semiconductor makers has an online downloadable (pdf) book, which uses parts of this book. If I can find it again I'll post the link.

Found it.

Read this; if you like it, there's much more in Marty Brown's book.

hi bob,
have a look on the 4hv forum. mainly high voltage stuff and Tesla coils, but there are quite a few power electronics designers on there as well. solid state Tesla coils form an excellent test bed for high power mosfets and igbts. plenty of gate drive circuits are discussed. the manufactures websites also have lots of useful info as well.
 have fun

I think you would be surprised to find that most of these "engineering books" have very little math involved at the level where you want to use then for.

If you know where to look everything is available, email me.

I recently got this one from amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/047175045X I picked this one because it has a complete chapter dedicated to the design of the magnetics and another chapter for layout and noise issues. Both things are critical for a converter that works great. I found specially useful the chapter on magnetics which I think is the most critical part.
