Coil turn question

Does anyone know how many turns for the 48V 10' Homebrew turbine using 16 gauge.  The Stator section only shows 17 gauge (48V) at 140 turns.

What homebrew turbine?  If you mean the one here at Otherpower and they specify #17 wire then get as many turns of #16 in as you can, it won't make much difference. At worst it may rob you of a few mA in very low winds and most likely you will more than make it up in higher winds with less stall, a bit more efficiency and less stator heating.

If you are careful with the winding and avoid the waste of space from bringing out the centre turn over the coil and squeeze the coils a bit you may get the same turns.

If you are up in magnet grade you may be better aiming for a few turns less so anything over 120 turns should do.

I use bits of 1/4" wide by .010 thick copper tape to bring the inside leads out and that would give you an extra layer of wire and gain you several turns.

Thanks Flux,

That appears to be a great way of getting the wire out of the 'center' of the coil.

I need to update that page...
Now that we are all mostly using higher grade magnets 16 gage fits fine - you can get 140 turns of 16 in there if you're really careful, we normally use 135 turns of 16 now though and a slightly wider air gap with N42 grade magnets.

Thanks everyone on your quick response!  I was referring to Otherpower 10' turbine.  It said it was made with 16 gauge, so I thought I would try to duplicate it in hopes of minimize the heat generation.  As far as updating the web page, could you also update the Coil Winder section. It has a lot of missing data, probably during upload.  Also it doesn't show the dimensions for the pin location on the 4" disk.

Thanks again for helping out!

Im also wondering about the pin distance on the 4" disk if anyone has built this and could post it would be helpful.
