New Front Page Poll Question

How are you Making Power ?

I changed the Front Page Poll question
The old question was asking What is your System Voltage, the Results with Comments can be seen here
http://www.fieldlines.com/poll/1208823889_wZykrztZ

The New Question is How are you Making Power ?

The Poll Section is Not on this page, but you can make comments.
It appears on the righthand side of the "Main Page" (Use your Back button), at the bottom of the Info areas on that side. You must have "Polls" enabled to be able to see them. If you don't see the Polls section then enable them this way...
On the right side of this page find the Menu Box with your Username on it.
Inside that box click the menu item for "Display Preferences"
At the bottom of that page is a listing for "Boxes"
Make sure the "Poll" box is Checked
The front page Poll will now display on all your Main pages.

Helpful Tip:
While you are in "Display Preferences" you should set
"Number of story summaries to show"  to 50
"Number of story titles to show" also to 50
This makes the Forum easier to use because 50 story titles will display on the Main Pages instead of only 8 which is the default for new users.

Wind Solar and Foot (3.00 / 0) (#1)

Right now:
  • 40v Ametek with 4' "duoblade" makes about 4A on a REALLY crazy windy day.  Othewise 2.5 to 3 is the average when it's windy.
  • Harbor Freight's "45 Watt" solar panel kit roof-mounted averages about 2.5A most of the day.
-Treadmill with original 2.5 HP 6700 rpm 130VDC motor still intact.  If I get on it and start pushing, I peak at about 9A into the batteries.  I've done ths approximately 5 times for nearly 10 seconds apiece.

- Someone is helping me with a 3ph motor conversion.  Don't want to say who to keep him from being bombarded with emails.  I do that enough to the poor guy already.

Nominal 12v system.

100% offgrid here. As much as I'd like to be totally RE, sadly I'm not. Not yet anyhow.

The bulk of my total power still comes from a home-brew propane powered genset (heavily modified 1800cc car engine). This, coupled to a 14KVA 1500 RPM machine makes most of the actual power, and provides the hot water for bathrooms, kitchen, laundry, and most of the heat for the hydronics system to heat the house.

Two banks of 330W each (660W total) PV makes a decent contribution during summer, and helps out in winter.

A 1KW wind turbine is really great on those days we have wind. Over the year, its actual contribution is minimal. Better than nothing, but I wish I'd have spent the money on more PV instead. It would be a better ROI.

Funny how that works, isn't it?  Currently I have a tiny bit of extra money.  I was debating whether or not to make another small wind genny, or buy another 45w harbor freight solar kit.  On the windy days, it's an easy choice.  Of course, so are the sunny days with no wind.   :-)

No matter which one I choose, there will be times when I wished I'd done the other.
