Screw in anchors

Can I salvage dig out old utility ones?

These seem to be left unused by the utility company. They would be free. I guess a lot of hard work would be involved in digging them out but ecologically speaking, time is not an expense...! Has anyone ever tried this? How deep are they? Can they be screwed  in again or did you just use them with concrete?

Hello Martin,
The electricity grid type anchors I have experience with are about 8 feet long. You may be able to dig around them and pour water in the hole to loosen them up a bit. To unscrew them, use a BIG prybar. You'll have to judge all the hard work invested for what you get in return.

The anchors can run about 40$ each or more, depending on how big they are.  If you get one out and it isn't rusted away, then you have something worth salvaging, IMO.

That is - if you can actually get them out of the ground.
They may look like they screw in, by they may have big flat plates down there, instead.

The ones that I used had a large flat plate on the bottom with a 3/4" bolt,if they are the same style you should be able to unscrew them from the bolt and pry out.

From my dusty old memories of installing screw anchors ,we used to screw them in vertically with a crowbar through
the eye and a bloke on each end and then bend the top foot over to line up with the stay wire, which would
have to be straightenened up before recovery.
I guess your chances would depend on age and soil type.
But I can remember getting a few back out.

cheers
Keith
