1HP 3P Motor Conversion Part III

Uh Oh! How do I mount the blade hub?

Part IV will be voltage tests with different wiring schemes (star, jerry, etc.) BUT....

I can't figure out how to mount something to it!  It has a keyed shaft, 7/8 inches in diameter.

For my Ametek, I bought one of Terry's arbors (tlgwindpower.com) which is a smooth female side that attaches to the motor with set screws, and a threaded male side with a nut and two very thick washers.  I simply drilled a hole in the center of my duo-blade, popped them on the  arbor's shaft, tightened the nut and was done.

With this one, I am having more trouble figuring it out.  Terry doesn't have anything that large.  Motion Industries guy says he can manufacture something for about $70.  There has got to be a better way.

So what do you guys do?  Zubbly's pdf files only cover the actual motor conversion, not blade assembly.

Once I figure this out, I can actually mount something to it and test the voltages.  I've sleuthed some data by turning it by hand.  And using the Duct-tape-on-my-drill method results in lots of broken tape when under load.

Thanks in advance for your advice guys.  Also the grooved slot is 3/16 inch wide.

zubbly always bought a weld on hub with the proper hole and key way and welded that to a metal plate with a hole in it for the shaft to go though then he sandwiched the blades between that plate and another plate with a small hole drilled in the center of it for a bolt that goes in a threaded hole that he drilled and tapped into the center of the shaft secure the bolt with loctite.

Thanks Kurt!  I was hoping to avoid welding something directly to the shaft.  That way, you can dismantle it if necessary.

But then again, on my Ametek genny, the set screws wore out and I ended up (JB) Welding it and the arbor together!  :)

That idea is on my list.  Would a Grainger or Fastenal type place have those?

Anyone else?

if i wanted a weld on hub i would go to a industrial bearing and belt supply store like motion industries they have a store just down the street from me..... but a large farm store mite have them like tractor supply or something.  https://www.motionindustries.com/motion3/jsp/mi/index.jsp

The hub does not 'weld on'. The sprocket zubbly got welded to a hub that had the spline and all on it.

Look at the sprockets and the 'taper-lock' stuffs. The taper lock was 'zubbly approved' and a damn good way to attach stuff to a shaft.

There are ways to attach prop to the hub with no welding. One could use a 'taper lock' hub and a large pulley. The pulley would then be drilled and tapped for the bolts holding the prop and backing plates.

What exactly is the "taper lock" idea?  I can't find a description online.

taper lock hubs are a two peice that bolts together tightening the taper on the shaft they hold very well look at surplus center.com dirindustrial.com  or granger

Awesome page, thanks!   :-)

Flux, after I get some numbers, could you help me determine the right blade size?  It'll be next week at the soonest.

I am working on a 3hp baldour 3 phase conversion right now, and ended up going to motion industries to figure out how to mount a rotor. What I ended up with was the taper lock bushing, and a large sprocket. The bushing slides onto the shaft (keyed) and then the sprocket bolts to the bushing drawing the two together. Once they get tightened down it's impossible to remove even after the bolts are pulled - which is why they put 3 threaded holes in the assembly to use the bolts to press things back apart. I drilled hole patterns in the sprocket for mounting the blades & cut the teeth off the sprocket (would do a real job on the knuckles if they caught ya while turning) and have a hub that I would say is about as solid as anything could be. The bolts that draw the two together will get safety wire run thru them when it all goes together permanently. I will eventually have pics of the whole thing, but will be waiting until I get it off the ground to post a complete start to finish write up on it.

The hub & sprocket was the most costly part of this project at $160, but I would rather spend the money on it than have a large rotor come loose.
