Sun Electronics "Sun" Panels

Sun Electronics

Greetings,

I'd like thank folks for taking the time to post their experiences on this site. I've spent the last year or so reading and educating myself about different types of RE projects and have found this site to be quite helpful. I'm about to build a small solar system and I've found Sun's prices to be the best around on a per watt basis (if anyone knows of better please do tell).

Now for my questions.

  1. Does anyone have experience with Sun Electronics "Sun" panels? They've recently added a series of lower wattage panels to their offering and I'm interested buying a couple for a small solar project, but, i can't seem to find any specs online (maybe the link is right under my nose and I missed it?).
  2. How is Sun Electronics with small orders? I saw that they may charge a service or packing fee, but there weren't any details offered on their site. How do they handle shipping. Will they arrange for it or am I completely on my own (yes I did see FOB Miami)? In my case I'll need to have panels shipped to the west coast. My first email attempt to contact them (over a month ago) went unanswered.
I'll probably give them a call in the next couple of weeks, but I'd like to hear about the experiences of others before I do.

Thanks!
momanz

Looks like not a lot of people here have experience with them.  I have been eyeballing some of there panels as they have good prices, and will be interested to hear of your experiences in dealing with them should you make your purchase there.  Rich

I can say this about them. They don't answer e-mail inquiries. I have e-mailed them 3 times and have yet to receive a reply (the first 2 mails bounced due to a full box at their info@ address). After I inquired the third time I did notice that they had posted a note on their site that the Sun-190 panels at $2.98 per watt were a 4 piece minimum order.

Hi,
I don't have any real experience with them, but did give them a call to explain what "blemish" means on their "blemished" Evergreen panels.  I got what seemed like a knowledgeable and honest answer.

You probably already know about this place?

and the same site for "B grade" panels:

I bought three on Thursday. Sun sells wholesale mostly to commercial installers. I went to Miami in person with cash to see what leftovers they had.

It a small family operation. James is the original owners son, I think. He refused to sell me the 190watt 25v panels advertised on the web unless I used an expensive commercial grade controller. He said people had burned out cheaper controller while using their high power panels. 190 watts, btw, is a BIG panel.

I bought a 55watt and two 28watt polycrystalline panels for $421 (no sales tax). They were different prices per watt. They are well made, with heavy aluminum frames. The 55 watt panel says it was made in France. The panels have a Sun sticker on the back and a makers serial number. The 28 watt panels say Voc 21.0v, Isc 2.05 amp, Vmp 16.5v, Imp 1.82amp

The 55 watt panel has the 'cracked ice' crystal look. The 28's are uniform rectangles connected with silver foil strips. The panels put out about twice the watts per sguare foot as my Harbor Freight thin film panels do. The 28's are about 1" wider and longer than the 15 watt HF panels (13"x36 1/2"). Actually HF exaggerates the output of their panels, 10 watts is more realistic.

Suns' panels use tempered glass, HF's do not. One of my HF panels is cracked. I bought some clear RTV silicone today to water proof it.

Sun has 28 KW of panels on their roof and sell back to FPL. They also have flooded cell batteries, LOTS of Xantrex inverters and charge controllers, and even have a 400 watt carbon fiber blade wind turbine for sale.

Thanks for the info. Nice pricing, I'm jealous <grin>... If I was anywhere close to Miami I'd have already visited, but alas, I'm about as far as you can get without leaving the country. I'm thinking of trying to get a 55 watt panel, although I may go with 2 30s (or 28s), haven't quite decided yet. What are you planning on powering with your panels?

It's amazing to be looking at retail panels from online merchants or auctions and see one panel have $17, $24 or $35 UPS shipping and the next wattage size up jumps to four or six times the price, or to truck freight. Avoiding 'oversize' shipping tariffs for DIY hobbyists could have a twin advantage, save now and have panels that others in the future will want to start or enlarge their own arrays with. The smaller panel may be slightly more expensive up front but that value will be there when you sell it if & when you upgrade.

If were to be accused of preaching anything it'd be to buy 1st tier quality panels - get low cost thin-film or 3,5, 7, even 10 (GE!) year warranty quickie silicon panels and in a few years there may be zero resale, sure they produce some power but the blotches growing on them or worse (HF panels are junk food) would warn off most anyone unless you are asking 10-cents on the dollar, this is where a 20 or 25 year warranty (even if not transferable) mono or poly crystalline first tier will still be selling for 80% of original purchase five or seven or ten years from now (if you don't live in death valley or somewhere that toasts arrays).

It's a mindset of values locked on thinking things 'should/would/could' depreciate similar to automobiles that gets hobbyists in trouble - a good silicon crystal PV panel has excellent chances of making > 80% of its rated power in twenty-five years so it easily could be making >70% in forty or fifty years.

James said he didn't like shipping individual panels because too many get broken. If you ship pallets at a time and a few are damaged, you can get buy. Small panels have a $20 premium to them because of shipping costs.

No one is their right mind would ship anything fragile by UPS. Sun uses FedEx. They were packaging up my three panels for the drive home before I told them it wasn't necessary to wrap them that well.

I answered an ad on ebay for 10-watt surplus DOT panels (Cape Coral/I-75 security cameras that didn't work well). The shipping was only $19 flat rate, but that doubled the price. I asked why the seller didn't just auction the whole lot, and they didn't give me a straight answer. I didn't bid, since the shipping cost ruins the deal. Even if the panels were free, it was a marginal deal, since I had no way of knowing how well the panels worked.

I ordered an Engel MT45F (12v/120v refrig) today. The Sun panels I got are to help run it instead of the Hotpoint refrigerator in my apartment. That gets me off the grid except for 2 porch lights, a 1 1/2HP pump on the canal out back and the washing machine. Of course I can't run a window a/c off panels, but this summer has been mild enough so far that I've only run it 4 or 5 nights.

If there is a hurricane or natural disaster, I can get by with one of my generators for the washer, and maybe run the a/c for a few hours.

Momanz.

I have been eyeballing the Sun panels for a while myself. I am looking at getting 3 for myself and 2 for my parents. (190W) I live in Utah so driving to Miami to pickup panels would be a chore but if I had a couple of people willing to share price of fuel I would love to pickup as many as needed. I have been looking for a good excuse to take a break from work.

Anthony.

I just received two of the 180 watt panels, a fx-80 charge controller and a 200 amp t-fuse and holder last week from Sun. The cost was $540 for each of the panels and $575 for the charge controller. I wanted the mx-60 but they were out of stock. Shipping for everything to western new york was $180 (panels by freight - everything else fed-ex.

Of the two panels I got one looks like new. The other has some areas where it looks like the front glass is a little away from the solar cell. This does not seem to effect the panel at all. I have added a picture of my test wiring (using 12 ga romex :) - will be using 2 gauge this week) so you could see the blemishes.

(note : in the left one that blob is a bee not a defect - that one looks perfect. All the blemishes are on the right one)

I wanted the higher end charge controller so I could get these grid tied type panels which were cheaper then the alternative. My plan is next year to add four more panels wired in two sets of three ( for about 75 volts at 15 amps )

Right now I have them wired in series and generate around 50 volts @ around 6 amps into the charge controller that way. I then have them wired into a 12v battery bank.

Now I just need to build a ground level rack, get the temp sensor for the fx-80 and a dc lightning arrestor.

oh... on the email thing... found that they did not answer the info account at all... I just picked a name off their contacts page : http://sunelec.com/About_Us/body_about_us.html

still took a couple of days for them to get back to me.

hope this helps

Thanks to this site I found Sun when I was ready to order.

I currently have 20 of the Sun 180's in the barn waiting for the rest of the equip to arrive (just waiting on racks now!)

I will say that the Sun folks seem a bit harried and rushed BUT the items were as described, shipping was timely and reasonable. There seems to be only 3-4 people in the office entirely. The panels came on a panel with each panel being seperated from the next with nifty hard plastic dividers. The entirity was then wrapped in plastic and well secured.

Their prices are tough to beat and I'm a seriously hard shopper on cheap stuff much less this order. I HATED their payment options , choosing to do a bank transfer personally (They take no credit)

The panles do have an occasional blemish but appear well built and solid (even still have Evergreen markings on them) Each panel was marked with it's tested ratings and tested similar for me.

I would buy from them again without a problem. I dealt with a young lady named Rosa and she was able to get me info quickly , usually by emailing it to me after checking.
