Just Getting Started

Hi Y'all,

I am just startin out, I will have many questions as I move forward with my project. I am sure that I am not as smart as most of you out there, but I am not stupid ether. I intend to figure this out with or with out your help! I do hope it is with your help, it expect it will be less painful, both physical and monetarily! My brother and I have built the 10' home brew wind turbine and have followed it to a "T" on the metal work. I have made my blades out of 12" dia 3/4" thick PVC water pipe. I will try to put pictures on this to show you what I have done. I helped my brother make blades from 12" dia. 3/16" thick PVC drain pipe. I can't decide which I like best, both work well so far. We have not put a load on either so far. I am fully prepared to make wooden blades I am a wood worker and can make them with no problem. I picked up a set of magnetics yesterday N40 grade, instead of the N35 listed in the plans. I tried to post a question about using N40 vs N35 that last night. I either did something wrong and did not get it posted or I was kicked out because I did not follow the rules. No matter, I am moving forward. I have decided on using a 48V system and bought the wire for that today. I have had a lot of fun doing this with my brother so far. I live just south of Dallas TX, and he lives near San Antonio, TX. so this has given us something to work on together as a fun project. We did the metal work at his shop in San Antonio and he came up to my shop to do the blades. we will start the coils here next week. Here is some of our pictures. If I can get them to load.

The N40's will work just fine. Maybe it will raise your cut in a few RPM. Not a big deal. It sounds like your having fun. Welcome aboard. You will soon be addicted like the rest of us (if you arent already).

We would love to see pics.  :-)

...Maybe it will raise your cut in a few RPM...  - typo?
Doesn't the conventional wisdom state that by increasing the grade of magnet, the cut-in RPM goes down?  Then you are told to increase the space in between the rotors a little, to lower the flux down again, to the level intended in the design.

Yes, sorry bout that, it was a typo. I guess what I meant to say was that it would raise the voltage sooner. In essence, lowering your cut in. I stand corrected. :-)

I either did something wrong and did not get it posted or I was kicked out because I did not follow the rules.

you must have messed up the posting because there is no story or diary in the log under your user name in the last few days except this one. nothing was edited or moved or hidden or i would be able to see it.

be sure when you hit post that you get a [thank you for posting] page. if you get a page with an error in red letters across the top your post did not go through and if you navigate away you will loose your post.

Welcome oak leaf, (disclaimer: I haven't built a wind-gen yet)

It is hard for old folks (like me) to read a large solid block of text. It would be nice if each paragraph was only 2 or 3 sentences...

How high a tower can you have? (wind is MUCH better up higher)

Does your city/county allow wind-gens? (you may be suprised)

Is there a safe "fall-zone" around the wind tower?

Just somethings to consider...

Best of luck! post pics as soon as possible!

Sorry for the large block. I will try to do better. I am more into working than writing. I will try to put pics on here again, not having much luck with that ether.

My metal Work came from otherpower 10' wind turbine and I think I followed the directions farly well.

The blades are made from 12" pvc water pipe that is 3/4" thick. They weigh 20 lbs each and they start turning with a 2 mph wind. That is with out a load I know.

Also if I offended anyone with my commits it was not intended.

now lets see if I can get some pictures on this.

Thanks,

Harlon
