Mr Woodstove Has To Go.

Surprise inspection from the insurance co.

We've been together since 1988 when i built my shop.It was so nice to come home after work and throw in a couple buckets of board ends from a local pallet co.

In severe cold just a couple big logs would burn all night.

It had :( triple wall flue pipe and all the proper clearances.

Now it would have to be 25ft from buildings and even then my rate would go up.

Thank god the turbine wasn't back up yet.I'm sure they made a note of the 4 pronged thingy(rotor) on the concrete launchpad though.

It's funny my neighbor is disabled and burns the crudiest crap wood that creasote leeches out the top of the chimney and a gov agency(cap services) comes over to help him clean his house.

Oh well maybe i'll use the stove in a little shack under the turbine someday.

I think I would die Vawtman.

Without the wood heater, life would not be worth living. Sitting next to the fire is one of life's little pleasures, I miss it in the summer when I don't use it.

But when the wind is blowin in the dead of winter, and the rain is belting down on the roof...... hell what would it feel like without the fire going. Sitting in front of a heater just doesn't cut it.

Thats it..... shift. No fire , no stay.

Hi Oz
Came close once a long time ago when i put small bucket of waste oil topped off with a little gas in it.Started slow and evacuated when it looked like the shuttle was taking off.6Ft flames shooting out the stack once the oil heated.
But it apparantly was fine back then.

 Learned alot that day.

Dear vawtman, I am still learning, and I live in a desert, but I hope to someday live in snow country.

There have been several long threads about wood heating, and I seem to remember that having a separate shack (25' away) burns twice as much wood (as opposed to a Franklin stove in your living room), with the horrible characteristic of causing lots of building fires.

I don't understand it, but, what do you think you will be doing for heat now?

Hi Spinnin
I've got several gallons of waste oil saved up.I think that route would be next.I'm not sure how they rate them UL or whatever.
I guess i could build the turbine 50ft tall and flick a switch when i get home.

I prefer to shy away from that for now.LOL

Your welcome up if you want to explore.

 Thanks
  Mark

if i was you i would shop around for some quotes for home owners insurance (if you have owned your home for a wile your policy probably needs to be updated anyway) you can probably get your house insured with the wood stove for not much more than you are paying now.... and the price difference will be offset by all the money you will be saving not having to buy oil/natural gas/propane/electricity to heat your home unless you are buying cord wood now. that is assuming the wood stove is installed properly and up to code...

Hi Kurt
Ya that was the excuse for the inspection i guess(updating).Do you know of an insurer?Mine said nobody will, seems odd.

I agree with not wasting money on the crap they sell us.Not the fuel but the farts that trade it.

The insurance "gimmick" here is we have electric main heat [never used] and "supplemental and backup wood stove" Masonry chimney so its class "A" venting. The insurance guy did come look at it but was a cursory exam since its installed properly with stainless pipe between stove and chimney, proper clearance to combustibles, etc.

Of course we are a farm so that may be lots different than town.

Just how we do wood heat and get it insured with no problems.

Vawtman: I think you are getting a bad deal on yer insurance if you have no history of probs. I don't know but if you've been there a while and meet all the code strictly then it should be no problem.

Vawtman,

Bummer.

Why not check with some of those insurance companies that give you a quote from their website ? Perhaps those that don't have a brick & mortar office near you. Likely never see a rep show up at your door. I mean, you're just shopping around, right ?

I've had a few of those inspections.  Always have to find something to justify the 3rd party inspectors fee to the insurance company I suspect.  Basically, when I have one at an apartment building, I just figure it is going to cost me $$$.  Most of the things they point out are pointless or even a bad idea sometimes, but every once in a while they come up with a good idea which gets implemented.  I would think you could find insurance with that wood stove, it would just be more costly in general.  Rich

Hey Vawtman,
Wood burning is something you simply HAVE to have especially now with whats happening to fuels.  Many more people now are demanding to burn fire wood.
Something similar happened to my father a year ago. They wanted to greatly raise his rates for having a wood burning stove in the new house. (even according to code)

He decided to look around with other companies and got an even better rate from AIG insurance than he was paying in the first place! You might want to check them out. They didn't even inspect. But it can't be a 'homemade' stove. If it is, just say it's name is "Franklin". (secret nick name)

But without the stamp i may be screwed.

I was really joking. My father had made an excellent 1/4" thick steel stove that worked better than any UL approved like yours does, but the insurance co. made him take it out also.
If the house burned down they would not pay then. They would love to find any reason to weasel out of paying. It does stink that it is that way. Best to follow their rigid rules in case.

Dear vawtman, thanks for the invite (what part of what state are you in? I'm in SoWest Utah)

First of all, I would NEVER encourage ANYBODY to do anything that was less than appropriate, but...

I recall reading somewhere about a homwowner who purchased and installed an heating-oil burning storage tank and furnace that was UL and code-approved, and after the inspector signed off on it, I was appalled to read that the homeowner adapted it to use WVO (whatever THAT is) with some of the exhaust warming a coil of the incoming oil to thin it.

If you catch anybody doing this, please warn them of the dangers (after you first post some pictures...)

Like serving red wine (in a brown paper sack) with chicken, I don't know why it isn't done, but there MUST be some reason?

Just got the letter in the mail it states:

 Dear Mark&Kim,
I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that you will need to remove the wood burning unit(LOL) in the garage immediately(been there for 30yrs under the same ins co)
After it is removed you will need to sign a statement saying that it has been removed and that you will not be putting it back.In addition,I will need to come out and take a picture to send to the company to show that it has been removed.

I will wait to hear back from you.Thank you for your understanding with this matter.

 Sincerely

I hope the oil brokers don't see this it might drive up the price of oil.

About 25 years ago I had issues with State Farm's grey area's(pay the premium if something would happen they most likely would not pay). I went to an independant dealer and got farm insurance. No grey area's with sheds/outbuildings/contents, woodstoves and the like... Unlike the oil monopolies, there are many insurance companies... Hang in there you will find one. They may add a rider for a few bucks but you can be insured for just about anything... just a thought.
