Problem with 38V Ametek motor

shaft is binding

I have a 38V 1150 RPM Ametek motor that I had been using in a pedal generator.  It no longer rotates freely unless I loosen the two nuts that hold the housing together.  Then it spins fine.

The shaft doesn't appear to be bent (at least not noticeably!), and since its a 5/8" shaft, I wouldn't have thought this to be likely.  As anyone else has a similar problem with this motor?  Any thoughts on what might be wrong?

With it fairly well tightened....try tapping on
the side gently with a hammer each time checking
to see is it frees up....
This works sometimes....
Can you trace back to when it worked?
some motors have slightly less than ideal bearings
and if they aren't aligned they bind.

Output wires shorting or a magnet has come loose, realy they are simple robust motors even with rough bearings, just my experience.

Is the drivebelt or chain really tight? You may have a worn endbell.

 Just my thoughts.

Thanks for all the feedback.  The problem seemed to have developed after one especially heavy usage session where the motor got fairly hot.  I've taken it apart a couple of times, but see no obvious damage (no loose magnets etc.) except for a few chips of peanut-colored plastic inside the case.  Not sure where those came from....

The output wires aren't shorted together, and the problem occurs with the drive belt disconnected (so it's not caused by the drive belt being too tight).  When this problem occurred in the past, I could tap on the end of the shaft to free it up, but this has no effect now.  I'll try removing the shim washers to see if that improves it.

I just salvaged a motor off a treadmill someone was throwing away, and since this latter motor already has a flywheel and pulley on the shaft that would actually improve my drive system, I will likely just end up using it instead anyway.
