The new Engel 12v fridge/freezer

40 quarts instead of 43/plastic instead of metal

I got an Engel 40 for $680 from BigFrogMountain on Tuesday. The Engel 45's are unavailable at least until the end of the summer because Engel suspended production to make the 40's. I got rid of the peltier junction cool box I had because it only cools 30 or 40 degrees below the surroundings and in south Florida in the summer, that's only lukewarm.

The Engel 45's are a favorite of over the road truckers, but fuel prices have made that occupation scarce.

The 40 doesn't have a digital display control like the 45, just a 1 - 5 dial. Below 1 is off and 5 is deep freeze. The compressor/guts of the 35, 40 and 45 is the same. The 40 has is no wire basket inside, either. The coils are inside spaced off the inner wall about 1/2 inch. The 45 had 43 quarts usable space with the basket.

The instructions say not to fridgerate more than "1" unless you use the cooler a lot, because it just makes it run longer. But I didn't trust them, so I went to WMart and got a $5 fridge thermometer and put it on top in the middle near the lid. After about 20 minutes I checked and it said 38F with the dial set about 1 1/2. There was frost on the coils inside, too, so the instructions are right. My apartment was un airconditioned at the time, since I had just gotten home from work.

I bought the Engel and emptied out the Hotpoint that runs on the mains and am using the Hotpoint for dry storage. As a single guy, I don't need that much refrigeratr space. My last electric bill was $18 because I didn't run the window a/c all month. I'm hoping it won't change much next month with the big fridge off and the window a/c on at night when I'm home. The clerk at the check cashing store where I pay my bill looked at it and said "Is that real?" I just told her I didn't run the a/c.

I plan on a small solar operated cold box also although I got a bunch of grief for spending almost as much as you did.

I nabbed a Webasto Isotherm 12/24/120V CR-49 a couple of months ago from a scratch and dent outlet, it uses the Danfoss BD-35 compressor and has a stainless steel frame and door with some dents in it, and this unit also does not have an electronic display style thermostat.

The model Isotherm I was really looking for is equipped with a phase-change holding plate and electronic logic setting that extends the no-voltage cold times considerably by maintaining the plate to between -10°C and -14° when the battery is charging, and only draws down resting batteries once the holding plate temperature reaches -1°C.... but that would have doubled the price IF I could've found one.

The Refrigerator has a 9.6/10.7 or 10.4/11.7 adjustable low voltage cut out/in and running amperage is 2.5 amps, they claim average is 0.6 amps draw. I thought I had a bad unit when it would not start but its soft-start function takes a minute plus to call for full compressor speed.

A couple of evenings of googling refrigeration forums gave me a good tip, most of the Danfoss DC voltage compressor failures are from not keeping the compressor control module as cool as possible - clean it with compressed air and make sure the coils have plenty of air circulation, even add a thin barrier to keep compressor heat from shining on it..

I wondered about the Danfoss compressors. Lots of bad reviews. Funny you mentioned dust.
My apartment is full of it. I am vacuuming almost daily. I don't run the a/c and leave the front window open. Thursday we had a rain storm with high winds. There was a puddle under the windows and dirty spash all over. The Engel is under the back window.
Notice I have a small compressor with a blow gun next to my setup just for quick cleaning.
