I use msn messenger but most people as said above use the IRC server available from the link in the right hand table.

http://www.repowered.co.uk - My Renewable Energy site.
msn[at]m3ezw.co.uk - my msn if you want a chat.

I can't use IRC, I think that the works firewall is stopping it from running.

You can transfer files in IRC, private chat but the other stuff is a no.

Did you read the EULA for msn ?

It used to claim rights to all information / data going through it.

Not so with IRC. No middle man but the IRC server we run on Jacques M's server in The Netherlands.

It works for many of us.

Those of you behind a work firewall and cannot use it maybe if there are enough of you we can set up a cgi client that will work through the firewall.

Anyone interested in that sing out here and I will see if we can do something to get you on.

improvement or infection? (3.00 / 0) (#7)

Rob,

Some of us may think all of the 'improvements' you speak about are not. I personally don't care for the 'audio chat' and don't care to purchase stuff for video chat.

The final thing is the microsoft name on the product. When I was a child there was a well advertised toy company that said "You can tell it's Matell. It's Swell". From what I can tell, microsoft has the swelled part, it's infected and if they get the chance they will infect your device.

So, improvement or infection?

Wow Ron,....you got some serious paranoia going on there!!

I don't keep any important stuff on my pc,..so if i get infected,..no big deal,....reformat and start again....

Sounds like your more against microsoft than anything else i dont care much for microsoft either but alot of people use the messenger,..like my friend in calif, I talk to him for free as long as i want international long distance,... to each his own......

"Ron's not paranoid,....he just think's everybody is out to get him"

(joke)

Is that an rc flying lawnmower in your pic?

No Rob,

Just honest observations. I sometimes will take a college course. They requires I have a Windows system to use their system/computers. I also have some CAD software that is Windows specific and a proprietary CNC system that runs under Windows ... sort-of.

I browse and do most of my work on this computer, a Debian Linux running PC. It never gets shut down except for hardware failures. It never gets 'infected'.

I spend many more hours dealing with Windows than I do the Linux based system. After a year of running a Linux system and seeing the ease of updates and lack of problems, dealing with the 'pesky' problems the folks from Redmond ... and the anti-virus ... and the software updates ... and the 'you need this new software to view this web-page' (aggravation on any computer).

That year was over several years ago. One of the Windows computers is fired up quite often. I'll guess I spend 20 hours or more a year dealing with the problems Windows, and most Windows users, see as native to the system.

I don't remember the last time I reformatted a HD unless I was setting up a new hard-drive or fresh system.

Just the view from here. Your mileage may vary.

Ron

Messenger?
Well, I use it for a target (windoze messenger) for "shoot the messenger" to home in on.
As to MSN Mess(enger)....it's just a target (hard though) to remove.
As well as turning off auto updates.

But normally I just run Linux without the mess(enger) and attendant problems associated with Windoze.

Far to many security holes for me to expose it (Windoze anything) to the 'net.
And as far as getting a computer infected....it's much more usable as a 'bot' then messing up the files you have, so the smarter hackers/crackers just own the box for "other purposes" to make a buck er two. They really don't care about your files much...outside of passwords for your bank, and naked pics of your wife/girlfriend, etc, :)

They would prefer you to never know and just leave it connected and running....it's worth much more that way. More then 95% of all windoze users would never know they are infected anyway, and most anti-virus programs lag a few days behind catching the the latest viral offerings...it's just a game I prefer to not have to fool with...so I boot up Linux for day to day usage.....IRC and instant messeges and all.
