How many watts are in 22000kwh? [CLOSED]

Everything I read says a kwh= 1000 watts. So am I correct to calculate 22000kwh as being 22,000 x 1000 watts = 22,000,000 watts?

My business used that much power last month ($3000 worth) so naturally I should look at a greener way to produce power for myself. I have enough land here (in the country here in Texas) to put up 3 or 4 wind turbines to help offset my bill month after month. I need to know how many watts we use on a daily basis to help in matching up wind units.

Btw, I'm building my own turbines because the last guy who quoted a new turbine said it would cost about $150,000 for the size I need. Naturally that's out of my budget so off I go to build it myself.

How big a turbine do I need?

NO NO NO!! 1 KWH = 1000 watt hours if you plugged in 10, 100 watt light bulbs and left them on for an hour they will have consumed 1 kWh of electricity watts is how much power a device uses at any given time (amps*volts). watt hour or KWH is energy used over time...

That web page doesn't come up.

So how many wats do I need to make to cover 22,000kwh then?

focus;

I might suggest that you focus on what he said. He gave all the info you need to get you started on a plan. You need other info besides what you need in KWH.

Your question really has no answer unless you have more information to offer on exactly what you are trying to accomplish [in detail].

Might be a good idea to do some reading.

That web page is his signature, not the answer to your question.

Some folks should just give money to the pros to get it done. You will need to spend a tad more effort to save that 150 grand beyond posing the question here.

You might think this is mean or nasty but the stone cold fact is you provide nowhere near enough information to get a useful answer.

None of this is rocket science but it is a bit technical and your initial post shows you need more knowledge of electrical power and energy in general.

Good luck figuring it out.

Well, if your business used 22,000,000 watt-hours in a month and it operated 22 days a month, then it uses 1,000,000 watt-hours a day (That's the monthly total divided by the number of days your were open in a month.) If your business operates for 10 hours a day, then your need that divided by 10 ... or a 100,000 watt turbine.

If you can store the power or sell back what you make but don't use then you can run the turbine 24 hours a day, 30 days a month so the number is less: 22,000,000 watt-hours / 30 days / 24 hours = 30,500 watt turbine.

Those figures, through are the average power that you need to make. Wind speeds up and slows down. If you have seasonal variations, you'll need to size your windmill farm so that it makes all the power you need in the slow months ... or, if you can sell back to the power company you can size for the yearly average and just call it even on a yearly basis.

Honestly, though, the quote you got seems unbelievably good if he's guaranteeing that $150 kilo-dollars does what you need ... that's a 4 year payback on the cost and that is an unbelievably short period of time. Unbelievable. I wouldn't believe him if I were you...

Hope that helps,
 - Ed.

Thanks Ed, you answered my question. I quess my figures were right.

If the other guys would spend more time trying to answer the question instead of trying to look smart we would all learn more on this post.

Tom, you are a smart a$$ and I would assume this post would be better off without you. At least for this discussion you were of no help... Get a life...

Again, thanks Ed for being of useful help!

Careful, now. I told you not to mistake it as mean.

I have answered literally thousands of questions here. The one you answered today was misinformation.

Consider your position before getting froggy, sir.

How can one not mistake your post as mean? Reread it Tom, one would see that you were being a total a$$.

Tom, you are nobody to tell me anything sir. What? you going to ban me or something? To bad I have more ips and email addresses then you have dollars sir. You can't keep me away no matter how hard you try sir.

You are still a ahole for wasting our time with your post that supplied zero information on my topic. Do yourself a favor and keep your nose out of other peoples posts unless you're really trying to help. Read your post again and ask yourself if you were of help or a jerk. Go on, read it.

Take it or leave it Tom, your an a$$.

Do as you will...

focus,

If you are using that amount of energy your 'first best step' is to conserve energy. To do that you need to figure out what is using the energy and how much each is using. From there you can attack use.

Your 22,000kWh a month is over 30kWh, per hour, every hour of the day, every day of the month. I have no idea of where you are in Texas but the wind resource in Texas goes from great to all but none. To output 30kW of power continually, a mill needs to have a 25m diameter set of blades and be in 20mph of wind. This size mill would need to be on a  tall tower.

I think you will find it a lot easier to cut your power use than to produce all of the power by wind and/or solar.

Hello Ron,

I live in a class 3 wind zone. Large 750kw and larger turbines are within view of my store. The wind is here, no worries there. We often have to chase our trash cans down the street because the wind is so powerfull. It's not blowing everyday but this area has an average wind speed of 11 to 15 mph. Good enough for wind turbines.

Conserving is pretty hard to do in my case. I have a store with a grill that uses large walkin coolers and freezers as well as all the equipment to go with it including 20tons of A/C. We already conserve what we can and cutting back anymore would mean turning off the A/C and then I wouldn't have any customers coming back :-) The store is large (over 3700sf) and we're open 15 to 17hrs a day 7 days a week.

At this point we're maxed out on consevation and now need to move into greener power. I'm fairly confident I can cover most of the cost with a wind farm. Doing it myself will cost half as much as dooping into buying a professional setup of this scale. Some people like Tom here recommends buying a professional system but that's if you can't build one yourself or don't have the time. I prefer to get more for my money and build them myself. One system is out of the question, more like 3 or 4 turbines should cover it at about 5 to 7kw each. Again, it wont cover it all but maybe half.

Ed pointed out 30kw as being a starting point and my early on figures before I posted were almost dead on. I think going a little higher is required to completly cover my usage but 30kw will get me going.

And again, Tom, get off the computer and get a life. Theres more to life then sitting around waiting to flame a post, really.

TomW was being tactful but honest. No need to get insulted and offensive.  There is no easy answer to what you are proposing for such big power.  Getting thru the polital red tape for such a thing would most likely be impossible to do.

Only thing I would say is to put at least 12" of R30 insulation around each freezer and make sure you have a white Duralast roof.    Put all the money in mega insulation and study and redesign the freezers.
