Generator and Deep Well submersible

10/3 over 40 feet?

I had my electrician put a 220v male outlet outside my house and in the basement he has to female outlets, one for grid and one hanging that goes outside to the previously mentioned outlet. In event of power failure, I start up my genny, which is 6000 watts, not sure what surge is, them plug in cable to wall for pump.

So my question is, is 40 feet of 10/3 good enought and I assume that I should start the genny first, let it run a while then run water in house as per normal

Anything I am missing?

Thanks

1963;

I closed the other 2. I will remove them now since you see you did it 3X.

No worries.

I sugest you look up one of the many voltage drop calculators, as 10/3 means nothing to me.

As you don't tell us what the power rating (voltage, HP/Kw) is of your pump and not knowing what 10/3 is, it's anybodys guess.

Try these voltage drop calculators or google for others.

Allan;

Well, I happen to understand the 10/3 part, at least.

Thats a cable that has 3] #10 insulated conductors in one sheath. Often with a bare ground of #10 in the bundle.

Very common for feeding 240 volt circuits here. Stuff like pumps, welders and electric water heaters.

10 gauge wire is usually considered good for 30 amps in home wiring i am quite sure your pump doesn't draw anywhere near 30 amps at 240v so you should be good.
