54 pl radial

After about 30hrs of center punching, sanding and finger painting all are on.The one with the smily face and white cap was the last one.

Over 8ft of surface area on the beast.

It's fun and everything went great. Here's a pic

Also, would like to thank Kurt from irc for helping me fix my antivirrus last night.

 Puter is workin fine now

Congratulations with the monster!!
You didn't balance it?Could be worth doing, just turn it in HA-position(horizontal axis).
I'm puzzled.How many coils for 54 mags?

cheers,
Jaap

Wont be worth balancing until the magnet return band is attatched.

It's a magnetic levitation alternater the more mags i put on the higher it rose from the table.Very common to vawt builders. :v)  (kidding of course and don't try this at home)

Hi Edaddy

 Next step?

I will put the 1/2in plywood mags over the real ones and set the outer band. Then design the brackets for it.You can see part of it in the pic sitting on the table.

The outer band will have no mags but rotate with the wheel(rotor).

Then take the whole thing apart and give it the final finish of Devthane.(a high gloss ureathane finish for corrosive environs.

 Then test coil and umbrella.

mark;

Going to be an interesting stator build.

You going to build it in one piece or figure out arc sections or what?

I may have to jump in the Beetle and drive over and see it some time. Assumption being I outlive a few projects and get some "free" time anyway.

Hi Tom

I used a weak ferrite for double checking polarity has i went around. It is cool to hold it loosely and move it around. It literally spun around in my hand.

Your beetle should be safe here has all the flux will contained within the gap.

The blades might grind it up though.Welcome anytime though.Has you welcomed me.

I can see my test coil may be under a bit of stress.

Way to go Vawtman, after a long winter of inaction, it has the feeling of getting up a head of steam. Can't wait for the next exciting installment (and can't see an easy way of how you are going to do it  either, but I have faith).

May have to park the car further away too. :)

Hi Vawtman,
It looks great so far.

I know if it was me building that, it wouldn't be long before I found myself peeling that band of steel off those magnets, smashing my fingers and cussing all the way.  I'm such a klutz I'm certain it would happen.

How are you going to get those bands around it anyway?  (The suspense is killing me)

Hi Ed
Nice to here from you again. If i make it with a solid welded band it wouldn't be hard.If it's adjustable(in sections) may be tricky i think now.

Has you know it may take me time and thought not unlike you with your great projects.Your advice is awesome for me.

I remember back in the early days thinkin how easy this would be.

Ahh that was >3 yrs ago.Well still kickin and havin fun.

Is it just epoxy that keeps the magnets from drifting, or is it going to be that plus conmprssion from the outer band?

Would a tack weld damage the magnets?

The trouble with seeing pictures of a half-built invention is that you can't always picture the next half.
The steel band, as best as I can tell, will be mounted away from the magnets - there will be a space all around, and coils will go between for the electrical circuits.  So the stator will probably look like a bicycle rim or something.

You can't weld the material in magnets (as far as I know) and what I'm worried about is how vawtman is going to mount that outer ring.  If he welds something onto the inner ring to support the outer ring, the heat is going to cook the magnets.  Getting magnets hotter than about 150F can make them decidedly non-magnetic.

Those were my thoughts as well.   It's difficult forcing a good weld in without making a considerable amount of heat.   If the brackets are designed to sit in a slot then a simple tack would work fine.

Brackets could be welded to the ring that would have a hole for threaded rod,( or simply drill the ring if its tall enough) then the wheel need only be drilled for the rods... ring spokes as it were....

We're all waiting to see what your going to do next VAWTman....

Hi Ed

The wheel is cast iron and i cant weld it nor would i with the mags near the weld  zone.I tested a neo on my wood stove once and it's cool how it just fell off.

The bracket will be welded to the outer band though and installed has a completed assembly to the wheel using epoxy and bolts.I'm thinkin of making the brackets with 2in.x 3/16 same has used for the band.

I'm not sure if want to make the band adjustable or not yet.I'll probably set the gap at 1/2 in. and see how a test coil works.I can always make adjustment to them at a later date.

 Havin fun

 Hi D

Cast iron(the rotor)is very porous to begin with but i also divoted each mag location with a center punch ~20 times. The mags were scratched with a hacksaw blade.

I did a test before starting and the mag broke trying to remove it.Sacrificial lamb so to speak. No potting needed.

This is the stuff and works great.

its keeping every one in suspense. me included .

are you going to pot the mags .looks like the time is near now if you are.
did it take you three years to collect all the mags.

Hello Vman...

I really like what I'm seeing!
I've quickly looked though a bunch of your other stories.
Somewhere I saw your looking for 240v@120rpm and another place a comment of 2kw
Is this still what your shooting/hoping for?
54 magnets?   what size and types?
It looks like it's getting to a size where your going to need neighbors to help move it.  You have a fork lift to help you out?  For it's size, I'd start worrying about how close you park your car (it's not a Delorien sp??).  If it has a metal based paint it's going to start sliding....

It's looking pretty good, testing it is going to be a bear!   Good luck!!

and if you don't mind, I'd like to steal your thread for just a sec and give an big ATa boy to Oztules (didn't wanna give it in his threads else it might go to his head)

Good fun, good work!

Yes,I plan on feeding a preheat tank with it.

The 2kw is just for Ron :v)

The tower will only be ~20ft.

Yah i heard his head got so puffed up that he was allowed back to the mainland for treatment.

Hi Mark...
This all leads me to another question (I'm sure more to follow).

How much copper are you planning?  Looks like a lot, I'd ask in another way..  but I'm afraid your wife might be looking over your shoulder.

Preheating what?  looks like you may be able to heat your house this winter.

based on our spring weather here, winter looks like it's going to be a ... booger.
