Windmill Fun in Iraq

Very Nice small windmill

"SSG S" needed a controller.  We emailed a bit, and he sent photos.  He is not familiar with forums.  I told him he would enjoy this one, and we would love to see his windmill.
I offered to post this, he agreed, the military approved the photos, and here it is!

"SSG S" with his creation made from the recycle bins.
The only items purchased were the magnets and controller.

The tower is very short.  It is a good idea to place short towers on a treeless `hill'.
The next time someone asks about placing a small windmill on their garage, we should ask
"Exactly how big is your garage?"

The wind sock points to the windmill.

The blades remind me of fine furniture!

It is a single rotor with laminations made from pallet banding.

The stator is a bit on the small side.  Small is not easy.

That is a 9V battery!

Technical information...
A 12V system, 9/12 single rotor with laminations.
Blades are 4.5 TSR.
Magnets are 1 x 3/8 x 1/8" on a 4.25" diameter disk.
Coils are 96 turns of 0.020 or 0.022" from an UPS transformer.
Wired star.
Makes 1 to 3A in a good wind.

A few pieces Non-Technical information...

This is his first windmill.  He had no one to answer questions.
The stator shown was an upgrade.

The "grid" generator failed.  The power went out.
SSG S had light over his work area.

He told me "I had some real limitations with tools available."
And "It was a real challenge."
My response was "No Sh-t?"

He didn't believe it was overly interesting.  He may like to know someone other than me is interested.

Bad News.  The windmill was taken down and is not flying.
Good News.  SSG S has done his job and is bringing the windmill home to fly in American wind.

Thank you SSG S.
Be proud of ALL your endeavors.

Revision of previous statement:

"First off Thank you to you and everyone over there for your service to our country." Should read: "First off Thank you to you and everyone for your service to the people of the free world."

Anyone who gets between this old air force geezer and armed fanatics has my complete respect. To just say thank you doesn't seem as if I am doing enough.

The prop on that beauty is so well done that I thought it had been mounted on a plane before it became part of the windmill. First rate work/fun. It's a dandy.

top marks to that guy. he did such a nice job.
the blades are perfect. great workmanship .
the tail matches in and looks just right.
the stator is great and so small. who would have thought to make it like that.
i wish i could claim that was my first wind gen.

   very impressed and good output.
later i might just try to make a copy of that.  keep it simple .
and thank you ghurd for all you did.
otherwise we would never have known anything about it. good lad ghurd.

And thanks to Glen for posting it.

Fascenating!  Interesting craftsmanship.  Blades look marvelous, and 1-3 amps isn't bad.  Hope SSG finds a way to drop in here.  Rich

Well, first I would like to thank you for your support of what I and many others are doing and have done here.  Your support means more to us than I can possibly express.

Thank you all for your encouragement on the windmill.  I have wanted to build a windmill for years and finally got this one together.  I have been a woodworker for as long as I can remember.  The electrical side was a "learning experience" for me.  That really was my goal with this one.

I appreciate your comments and input.  I would like to be able to start charging with a little less wind speed.  As ghurd said, It takes a "good wind".

Thank you ghurd for all your help getting me going in the right direction, and introducing me to Fieldlines!

SSG S

Hey S,
Welcome.  Nice to see you "here".
Hope you are home, or on your way.

I got some emails from people who said the same things but didn't post a reply.
I told them I wish I never would have posted this, because now I have NO excuses...
I will never be able to post a photo of my crappy PVC blades again.  Too embarrassed!
Just kidding, twice.
Very glad I posted it, and expect to see more crappy stuff posted by me.

After days of packing, preperation, and travel, I am back in the United States now.  Wow, it is good to be back.  My windmill is still enroute.

I enjoy your comments.  Thanks, and no need to be embarrased.  I didn't even know PVC blades were an option until I started doing some research.

SSG S;

Glad you got back in one piece!

Thanks for stepping up to the plate and going in harms way for us.

Hope your turbine makes the trip in good shape and a timely manner. It truly is a nice piece of work.
