24v turbine for 12v

24v aquair turbine

I have a 24v aquair turbine 100watt.  a c40 charge controller and two 12 volt batteries wired for 24v as well.  long story short 1500watt 24v inverter only converts 24v into nice smoke.  can't afford to buy a new 24v inverter right now.  but i have a 12v inverter siting here collecting dust.

just wondering if there is any harm in re adjusting my c40 controller and batteries to 12v and using my 24v turbine to charge my batteries. can this hurt the turbine or the batteries? I know the system will not be as effecient but at least i can use my 12 inverter

thanks

The Aquair turbine is supposed to be adjustable to 12v.

Then you would set the C40 and batteries the same.

Check your cables and conectors, too. A 12v inverter will pull a lot more current.

the aquair turbine is not ajustable but comes in either 12 or 24v models.  Im using just a 110vac hotwater element.  Will this be enough to handle the 12v system?

Make sure the dump load resistors are able to dump enough amps at 12V to keep the battery voltage under control.

The 12V charging amps will go up (I think), but the same resistors will only dump half as much as they did at 24V.

The resistors will dump a quarter of the amps at 12 volts

sorry, meant to say half the watts. (half the Amps @ half the Volts)

I am obviously stuck on stupid tonight, A QUARTER the Watts, half the amps @ half the volts.

Got there in the end. I have moments like that, put it down to age in my case.

Yes half current , 1/4 the watts.

Apart from watching the diversion controller for not dumping enough current I think it will be ok. If you can reconfigure the turbine it will give you more power but you won't hurt anything.

DB;

Yeah, even when you do this stuff "regularly" it can get confusing.

You got it in the end tho as others affirmed it is half the amps at half the volts and one quarter of the watts.

Good save!
