Motor conversion success

Thanks to our pal Zubbly

I've finally exceeded 500 watts with my little motor conversion. It turned out I just needed a couple pounds of lead on the tail to increase furling speed. The motor was a 1hp 600v 3phase 8 pole fully enclosed with nice cooling fins and a robust 1 and 1/8" output shaft. A new rotor was cut of mild steel to the required smaller dimentions to fit 8 rows of 4, 1/2" x 1" discs NSNS offset 10 degrees so 32 in total. It's fitted with offshore fiberglass blades which run fast and silent (did I get the only set?).My system is 48vdc nominal but hanging around at 56vdc today with my 10a gauge occasionally buried (HA! plus 500w big deal for me)although on a less windy day I'll admit it tools along at 50 to 100 watts.
Flux got this thing out of stall for me with his kind post kicking my butt out of 12v to 48v. This had some monetary pain but I feel huge transmissons gains.
Tom W has made sure my rotor stays attached by suggesting line boring and tapping the motor shaft for a retaining bolt. I was just going to use the shaft set screws...duh!
I've poured a 48vdc stator for my 8' HUGH, tested it although not in the great winds of the fall in Canada.
The boss of all things won't grant a second tower for my second alternator but things could be worse.
Retired just recently so straight play time now.

Congratulations!  And glad to hear that the advice given by the respected members of the board has worked well for you.  I have benefitted in the same way for years, here.

Yup,
I even lived in Barrie for a year, when I went to Georgian College.

Fully charged and doing a little equalizing now (equiv of 14V on a 12V system.)  Great!

Don't forget to dump 'em down to something sane before they boil dry.

Time to start consuming some of those sweet watthours.  B-)

As long as it works, I am happy!
