What's the demo machine supposed to prove (in the video)?  It's sitting on the sidewalk facing a building.  He's probably "motoring" the generator to flap the wings.  It is possible to consume more than 59% of the flowing wind energy to produce motion.  In fact it is possible to consume a nearly infinite amount of energy and produce no mechanical work at all.  It's called heat. Unfortunately we Do have April Fools Day. IMHO it causes major disruptions.  (Slashdot.org, for instance, is completely unusable on April first, due to the editors' choice to include primarily "joke" articles.) I often thought, back during the Cold War, if the Russians had chosen to commit a first strike on April 1 they could have conquered, or at least wiped out, the West.  B-( [ Parent ]

The solar thing is moot at this point, until the price per watt of panels comes way down the new storage technology is meaningless. I aint skeered a nuthin......Oh S%*T! What was that?!!!

I didn't see any claim in TFA that the machine might beat Betz. In fact the article explicitly cited the Betz limit (giving the 59.3% approximation) and talked about the new turbine trying to come closer to it than stuff currently on the market (which it characterized as running about 30% efficient). Also the inventor posted a comment and said they don't make any claims at all and are just trying to get it to work.
