Looking for an electric winch

Where to find the right one...

I am thinking about getting an electric winch so I can stand further back when the tower is raised.  It would also be nice if it fails midway, I can manually take over and finish the job.  I don't want the tower to come down if the battery or motor fails.

I started looking on Ebay, but I am not sure if this is the right place.  I found this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Brand-New-Electric-Power-ATV-WINCH-2000LB-2000-lb_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQh ashZitem5ad1ed4a4dQQitemZ390069045837QQptZMotorsQ5fATVQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

What seems strange is the cable is 5/32" and it is rated for 2000lbs?  I have 1/4" cable on my winch and the working load is stated as 1400lbs.  So how are these guys stating that 5/32" is ok for 2000lbs?

Thats looks like a Harbor Freight winch that usually sells from 39.95 to 59.95 depending on which special they are having. I use one as a log turner on a band mill, works fine but don't have worry if it fails nothing falls.

I have two of the 12V HF winches.  One of them is radio controlled and I must admit I like that feature.  I do many things that my wife considers dangerous.  It is nice to keep some distance and just press a button on the remote.  One interesting thing is that pushing the button operates the winch for a set minimum time increment.

according to :

5/32 has a breaking strength between 2600 and 2800 lbs.  2000lbs is awful close to that though.  seems a little fishy.

one thing to keep in mind is the winch will only pull the full rating when there is only one row of cable over the drum.  as additional rows/layer build up the radius the cable must pull over the drum decreases its pull power.  i guess this is almost perfect for tilt up towers, seeings how you need the most umph when the largest amount of cable is out (less turns on drum).

mile marker is a pretty solid winch company, and as i recall, they have pretty good pricing as well.  this one seems pretty nice, but spendier than the HF models...

5/32 @ 2000 sounds more like half the breaking strength.
1400 pounds on a 1/4inch line looks to be standard for a 6 or 5:1 safety factor.

In this case, you should be using cable rated for "overhead use." or derate to an appropriate safety factor.

If an electric brake is not fail-safe enough for you then you will have to find a worm gear driven winch.

This is perhaps the best, because it can breake the full load.

The break is very important, because when you winch the mast up and espesially down and sometimes has stop in the midle, the winch must have full load brake.

I have winched several years with come up and its good.
